Schoenhard second, Jensen third at state tourney
By Jay Davis
From the outset of the season, the Tigers knew they had two of the best 195-pound wrestlers in the state. The duo drove that point home when Chase Schoenhard took second at 220 pounds and David Jensen took third at 195 pounds at the State B Wrestling Tournament at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen on Friday and Saturday.
“David and Chase wrestled their best matches of the year,” said coach Spencer Novotny.
Schoenhard ripped off a 32-second pin over Justin Obaniana of Warner-Northwestern in the opening round, but then ran into a couple of familiar and tough opponents. Schoenhard needed to come from behind and score a takedown in overtime to beat Scott Assman of Winner 4-2 in the quarterfinals and used a last-second takedown to defeat Alec Lee of Faulkton Area 3-1 in the semifinals.
“That was one of the most exciting matches I’ve ever seen,” said Novotny. “Chase had to beat two kids he had already beat twice this year. It is not easy to beat a good kid three times in one year, but Chase did it.”
In the championship match, Schoenhard ran into defending state champion Brady Reiff of Parkston. He fell behind early and dropped a 9-2 match to the two-time champ.
“We were out-wrestled, but we didn’t get pinned like we did at the Big Dakota,” said Novotny.
Jensen had a tougher row to hoe to earn his third-place finish. After a tough 8-6 win over Trevor Lensing of Wagner, Jensen dropped a 7-1 match to eventual second-place finisher Tanner Broughton of Canton. The road Jensen would take was familiar on the mat.
“David had to wrestle three wrestlers from our region on his way to third place,” said Novotny. “He avenged two of his losses on his way.”
Jensen started the road through Region 4B wrestlers with a pin voer David Sigdestad of Custer. Next he edged region champ Reece Jensen of Harding County 3-1 before staging a 1-0 win over Herman Fennell III of Stanley County in the third-place match.
Isaac Olson went 0-2 at 120 pounds, but wrestled aggressively in his first trip to the state tournament.
Novotny said it was a great learning experience for the seventh-grader.
