Braves beat Cubs for Region 6A title

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte is headed to the State A Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2003 after defeating Chamberlain 70-63 in the Region 6A championship at Riggs High Gym in Pierre on Monday.
Trailing 51-49 after three quarters, the Braves turned the game in their favor with an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter. The Braves forced Chamberlain to turn the ball over on its first three possessions. Kamden Clown sandwiched two hoops around two free throws by Xavier Norris for the Braves’ first six points. Creighton LeBeau hit two straight shots before Clown finished the run with a free throw.
Chamberlain rallied to cut the lead to 60-57 with 3:15 to play, but Norris and LeBeau scored back-to-back to push the lead back to seven. The Cubs rallied again, but were forced to foul after cutting the lead to 64-61 with 39 seconds to play. Norris put the finishing touch on the region title by hitting six straight free throws in the closing seconds.
Early in the game it looked like Cheyenne-Eagle Butte would run away with the game. The Braves hit their first six shots from the field en route to an early 23-11 lead. But the Cubs answered with a 10-0 run and the two teams were locked in a tight battle the rest of the evening.
Norris led the Braves with a game-high 29 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. He added three steals and six rebounds. LeBeau hit three three-pointers and scored 19 points, while pulling down a team-leading eight rebounds. Clown added 12 points.
Skyler Bertram led Chamberlain with 21 points, but scored just two points in the second half. Hudson Priebe scored 14 points and Rueben Estes scored 11. Cody Medicine Eagle came off the bench to score nine points and grab a game-high 12 rebounds.
The 19-3 Braves enter the Class A State A Boys Basketball Tournament seeded fourth. They play fifth seed St. Thomas More in the 1:45  game next Thursday at the Sioux Falls Arena.
