Steph Gemar bettered her own discus record as part of the Tigers and Lady Tigers combining for 13 titles at the Big Dakota Conference Meet in Miller on Tuesday.
Gemar won the discus with a winning throw of 134 feet, 3 inches, which is also the top throw in the state so far this season. Her old record was 129-3 from 2012. Gemar added a second-place finish in the shot put.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers each finished second in the conference. Winner won both divisions. Winner outscored the boys 179 to 141 and the girls 135 to 126.
“It would have been nice to win the conference title,” said coach Marty Looyenga, “but we’re not going to break up our relay teams just to add a few more points.”
The Tigers had a huge afternoon with eight Big Dakota titles.
Austin Borah led the team with four titles, two individual and two in relays. He won the 100-meter dash in a state-qualifying time of 11.16 seconds and won the 400 in 53.24 seconds. He was on the winning 800-meter and 1600-meter relay teams. Borah ran with Mason Keller, Mitch Heumiller and Conner Stoick to win the 800 in 1:36.86 and ran with Keller, Heumiller and Jason Hill to win the 1600 at 3:43.51.
Hill won two individual and two relay titles. He won the long jump at 20 feet, 1.5 inches and the high jump at 5-7, while running with Stoick, Keller and Heumiller to win the medley relay at 4:03.15.
Reece Wientjes gave the Tigers their eighth BDC title by winning the triple jump at 37-4.5. Wientjes also finished fifth in the high jump and seventh in the 110-meter hurdles.
Carson Keller placed second in the shot put and discus. Gary Wollman placed second in the 800 and sixth in the 400. Fourth-place finishes went to Keller in the 100, Heumiller in the 200 and the 400-meter relay team. The 3200-meter relay team took fifth. Justin Nobles took sixth in the 3200 and Kenny Helm took sixth in the triple jump. Stoick took eighth in the 200 and Aaron Jacobs took eighth in the 3200.
The Lady Tigers added one individual and three relay BDC titles.
Lauren Henderson won the high jump, clearing 4-5.
The Lady Tigers matched their male counterparts by winning the 800, 1600 and medley relays. Alexa Schaefbauer, Maranda Wagner, Grace Wollman and Kayla Schneider won the 800 in 1:57.24. Henderson, Wollman, Wagner and Ashton Wiederholt won the 1600 in 4:43.8. Schaefbauer, Wollman, Schneider and Henderson won the medley in 4:57.75.
Mary Martin took second in the triple jump. Autumn Schlomer took third in the high jump and seventh in the 100. The 3200-meter relay team took third. ReAnne Kohlus took fourth in the 3200 and 300-meter hurdles and finished eighth in the 800. Wagner, Morgan Dienert and Keely Moriarty had fifth-place finishes, Wagner in the 400, Dienert in the 100-meter hurdles and Moriarty in the 300-meter hurdles.
