Austin Borah qualified for state in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes at the Black Hills Classic on Saturday. He capped a big day by running with the state-qualifying 1600-meter relay team.

The Tigers took advantage of the best competition the Hills has to offer by qualifying for state in three events at the Black Hills Classic in Sturgis on Friday.
Austin Borah set up a busy state meet by qualifying in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash and running the anchor leg when the 1600-meter relay team qualified.
“It wasn’t the best of conditions,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “But we ran pretty well.”
Borah finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 23.39 seconds. He ran a 51.69-second 400 and finished sixth.
The 1600-meter relay team of Borah, Mason Keller, Jason Hill and Mitch Heumiller took second with a time of 3:32.9.
The meet was run with fully automatic time. There is a math equation that knocks the times down to compare to handheld times. Borah is officially entered in state with a time of 23.0 in the 200 and 51.4 in the 400. The relay team’s official time is 3:32.6. As of the weekend, Borah is tied with the fifth fastest Class A time in the 200 and is tied for 14th in the 200. The relay team is ranked fifth.
Hill was the only other Tiger to place in an individual event. He finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 11.5 inches.
Three more relay teams placed. The 400-meter and medley teams finished third, while the 3200-meter team finished sixth. Heumiller, Keller, Hill and Conner Stoick just missed qualifying for state in the 400 with a time of 45.54 seconds. The same foursome ran a 3:55.45 in the medley. Gary Wollman, Hunter Gill, Jaidon Sjomeling and Justin Nobles ran the 3200 in 9:12.29.
Wollman closed in on qualifying in the 800. He took 14th with a 2:05.03. A 2:04.65 would have met the qualifying standard.
Steph Gemar led the Lady Tigers with a third-place finish in the discus. She went 1239. Kacie O’Conner of Sundance, Wyo., won the meet for the second straight year, going 144-0.
The Lady Tiger 800-meter, 1600-meter, 3200-meter and medley teams all placed.
The 800-meter relay team of Alexa Schaefbauer, Kayla Schneider, Cass Heumiller and Grace Wollman took third with a season-best 1:54.18. The 1600 and medley teams also took third. Heumiller, Wollman, Becca Martin and Lauren Henderson ran the 1600 in 4:25.26. Heumiller, Henderson, Maranda Wagner and Autumn Schlomer ran the medley in 4:46.43. The 3200-meter team of Henderson, Martin, Keely Moriarty and Ashton Wiederholt took sixth with a time of 11:47.06.
Schaefbauer took 14th in the 100 with a time of 13.13 seconds, just missing the 13.08 needed to qualify for state.
Looyenga said that time is running short on the regular season and it is time for the team to get focused for every event.
“It’s go time,” said Looyenga. “It’s time to really start thinking about what’s coming.”
Alysha O’Connell of Dupree was also at the meet. She finished third in the shot put, landing the steel ball at 36-4.
