An elated 800-meter relay team takes the podium after winning the state title at the State Class B Track and Field Meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Saturday. The state champs are (from left) Cooper Schaefbauer, Cade Opheim, Austin Iverson and Logan Schaefbauer.

The Herreid-Selby Area Wolverines used three state titles to come within a whisker of repeating the team title at the State Class B Track and Field Meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday.
The Wolverines scored 57 points, just one less than state champion Parker.
Dakota Thorstenson and Cooper Schaefbauer repeated as state champions and the 800-meter relay team won the title after finishing second last spring.
Thorstenson won his second straight triple jump title, landing at 42 feet, 4.75 inches. He beat Grant Preheim of Freeman by four inches. He could not repeat his high jump title, where he cleared 6-2 and finished third. For his efforts, Thorstenson was named the meet’s Outstanding Performer Field events. Thorstenson’s triple jump was a new Wolverine record.
Schaefbauer cleared the bar at 13-6 to win his second straight pole vault title. His winning vault was a full foot higher than he cleared in winning the 2103 title. Like his teammate, his state-winning mark was a new Herreid-Selby Area record. He needed the big vault as runner-up Garrett Anderson of Irene-Wakonda and third-place Andrew King of Arlington both cleared 13-0.
The 800-meter relay team of Schaefbauer, Cade Opheim, Austin Iverson and Logan Iverson blazed to a time of 1 minute, 32.3 seconds to win their state title. They edged Freeman’s time of 1:32.35. The foursome also ran 45.08 to place second in the 400-meter relay. Corsica/Stickney won the title at 44.82. The runners set a new Wolverine record in the 800.
Iverson was edged by Bryce Malsam of Edmunds Central in his bid to repeat as the state 110-meter hurdle champ. Malsam won the race at 15.21 seconds. Iverson was right on his heels at 15.34. He added a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
Logan Schaefbauer picked up an individual medal by placing seventh in the 400-meter dash.
John Begeman earned his first state medal when he took eighth in high jump.

Biel wins title
The boys were not the only ones to make noise at the state meet.
Haylee Biel capped her high school career by winning the high jump title. After taking second last year, Biel won a tight battle with two other jumpers to win state. All three cleared 5-1, but Biel took the gold with fewer misses in the competition. Payton Johnannson of Andes Central finished second and Ally Mullaney of Dell Rapids St. Mary took third.
The girls made the finals in two relays led by the second-place medley relay team. Charlie Tisdall, Courtney Anderson, Annabell Pflug and Grace Goehring combined to run 4:27.67 to beat everyone but Baltic, which ran a state-winning 4:25.56. Kara Thorstenson joined Anderson, Pflug and Goehring to take fifth in the 3200-meter relay. The girls ran 10:19.67.
