Lady Tiger senior Steph Gemar launches a state-winning discus throw of 136 feet at the State Class A Track and Field Meet in Sioux Falls on Saturday. Gemar won her second straight Class A title and second gold medal for having the longest throw in all three classes.

For the first time in 59 years, the Tigers have a two-time state champion. Steph Gemar defended her Class A discus title at the State Class A Track and Field Meet in Madison and Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday.
Not only did Gemar win the title, but for the second straight year was awarded the gold medal for having the longest discus throw in all three classes.
Gemar’s winning mark was a season-long 136 feet. She hit that mark on her second attempt in the finals.
“It’s pretty cool when you are the state champ and win the gold medal two years in a row,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “It is quite an accomplishment. We’re going to miss her.”
Even though Gemar could not extend her distance on her final two throws, the competition was not close. Runner-up Jordin Delzer of Madison went 126-11. Class AA winner Michaela Mayer of Sioux Falls Washington went 129-10 and Class B winner Carley Skorepa of Scotland went 127-3.
The last Tiger to win two state titles, was LeRoy Van Orman, who tied for the pole vault title in 1954 and 1955.
Gemar reached another goal when she earned her first shot put medal. She went 37-2.25 to take fifth place.
The rest of the Lady Tigers came up short in their bids to medal.
“The region was our state,” said Looyenga. “We did have some good efforts. Grace Wollman ran real hard in the 200 and 400. The 800-meter relay was close.”

Tigers
The best laid plans of mice and men, or so it went for the Tigers. With Mitch Heumiller out with the flu, the Tigers were shorthanded from the get-go and came up short in their goals for the weekend.
“When a runner is sick and can’t go, and one who is on four relay teams, you have to make adjustments,” said Looyenga.
The adjustments had the Tigers having to scrap the 400-meter relay team and change runners on the other three.
The final result was that just one relay earned a medal in the meet.
Austin Borah did put himself at the top of the record book, by tying for the all-time state medal count in Tiger history.
Borah placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.41 seconds and ran with Conner Stoick, Mason Keller and Jason Hill to take sixth place in the medley relay.
The 800-meter relay team made the finals, but was disqualified after an apparent mix-up on a handoff led to a mistake.
“Austin was a little disappointed,” said Looyenga. “It cost him that 10th medal.”
As it is, Borah ties Bailley Friesz and Derrick Orth with nine medals in state competition
His medal in the medley relay makes him the first Tiger ever to place in six different events at the state meet. Along with being on the state championship 1600-meter relay team in 2012, Borah medaled in the open 100, open 200, open 400, 800-meter relay and medley relay.
“We’re going to miss him too,” said Looyenga. “He had a great career. He’ll do good in whatever he decides to do.”
