Fire destroys sprayer

By Katie Zerr –

A fire early Tuesday, June 3, destroyed a crop sprayer stored on property near County Road 30, near the Midcontenant Communications tower.

Flames could be seen from County Road 3, and heavy black smoke, caused by burning rubber of the equipment tires, hung in the air above Mobridge.

According to Mobridge Fire Chief Brad Milliken, the fire and rescue squad was called about 4:30 a.m., and found the sprayer, owned by Michael McClellan of Mobridge, engulfed in flames. He said the tires on the equipment exploded but the crew was en route at the time and no one was injured when the explosions occurred. He said often with vehicle fires the tires explode and it was not as serious as it sounded.

Milliken said the fire was extinguished quickly and the fighters were on the scene about an hour and half.

He did not know how the fire started.

The sprayer was a complete loss, according to Milliken.
