Madison Rau and Reece Wientjes were in top form, each winning an event average, at the Ft. Pierre Regional Rodeo, June 6 through 8.
Rau won the barrel racing average. She won the first go with a time of 16.95 seconds and took third in the second go with a time of 16.689 seconds, giving her a total of 33.384 seconds to win the average.
Wientjes worked with Nolan Richie of Webster Area to win the team roping title. After taking third in the first go with a time of 13.26 seconds, the duo used a time of 8.52 seconds to win the second. Their 21.78-second average was more four than seconds better than the competition.
Both Mobridge-Pollock athletes added more success to their regional as Rau finished third in pole bending and Wientjes took seventh in tie-down roping.
Rau took fifth in the first go at 21.234 seconds and fourth in the second go at 21.361 seconds. Her consistent runs moved her up to third in the average with a total time of 42.595 seconds. Wientjes used a time of 19.36 seconds to take second in the first go of tie-down roping. He was unsuccessful in the second go, but the first go finish helped him hang on for seventh in the average.
Jordan Bickel of Timber Lake dominated the pole bending. She won the first go with a run of 20.772 seconds and the second go at 20.961 seconds, giving her an average-winning time of 41.733 seconds. Bickel teamed with Robert Tolton of Stanley County for second to Wientjes and Richie in team roping. They were second in the first go with a time of 10.12 seconds and third in the second go with a time of 15.88 seconds for an average time of 26 seconds.
Timber Lake had a lot more success.
Kailee Webb finished second to Rau in barrel racing. She was sixth in the first go and second in the second go. She finished sixth in girls’ cutting and ninth in goat tying.
Sloan Anderson took second in breakaway roping. She won the first go with a time of 2.79 seconds and took sixth in the second go with a time of 6.13 seconds. Her average time of 8.92 seconds was bettered only by regional champ Cedar Jandreau who had an average time of 6.82 seconds. Anderson added a seventh-place finish in barrel racing, taking seventh in the first go and eighth in the second go.
Jake Frazier took second in saddle bronc riding. He won the first go with a 65-point ride. That ride stood up for second in the average as champion Brandon Moody of Winner was the only cowboy with two successful rides.
Nolan Hall took third in bull riding in much the same fashion. He won the second go with a 51-point ride. Region champ Dylan Riggins of Kadoka Area, who also won the bareback riding title) won with a pair of second-place rides.
Courtney Dahlgren placed in three events. She and teammate Bailey Tibbs of Stanley County took fifth in team roping on the strength of a fourth-place finish in the first go. She took sixth in goat tying after taking eighth in the first go and fifth in the second go. A fourth-place finish in the first go of breakaway roping held up for a seventh-place finish in the average.
Sierra Enright took eighth place in the first go of breakaway roping.
The area’s cowboys and cowgirls converge on Belle Fourche next week for the 65th annual South Dakota High School Finals Rodeo. The state championships run from June 18 through 22 at the Roundup Grounds.
