JAY DAVIS: Bolduans had most successful decade in Tiger history
As you saw on page one of the sports, it’s “in with the new” for the Lady Tiger volleyball program.
While welcoming new head coach Rose Henderson and assistant coach Kara Piatt and wishing them piles of success, they cannot takeover without a fond farewell to the Bolduans for their 10 years of running the most successful sports program of Mobridge and Mobridge-Pollock teams during their decade.
Mobridge-Pollock athletics director Joe Lenz said, “The Mobridge-Pollock School District appreciates everything the Bolduans have done to build a solid and successful volleyball program over the last 10-plus years. They have been positive role models to many young ladies and racked up a lot of wins on the court in the process. I believe a very strong foundation has been laid and I look forward to many more successful seasons behind the leadership of Coach Henderson and Coach Piatt. I certainly believe that these two coaches have the background and knowledge to lead the Lady Tigers far into the postseason this coming year.”
You know I love my sports history so here is a synopsis of head coach Keri and assistant coach Rick and their 10 years of leading the Lady Tigers.
The Bolduans took the reins in 2004 and promptly went 22-13, won their first district and region titles and finished eighth at the state tournament.
The 2005 teams went 29-3 and finished sixth in state.
The 2006 and 2007 teams were the only teams that did not win in the postseason. The teams struggled but managed to stay competitive, going 11-15 in ’06 and 15-13 in ’07.
In 2008, the Lady Tigers went 20-9 and won the district title, but lost to Miller in the region championship.
That would not happen for a while. From 2009 through 2012, the Lady Tigers went to four straight state tournaments. The ’09 team went 24-9, upset Sioux Falls Christian in the opening round and finished fourth in state. The girls went 25-7 and took seventh in state in ’10.
The 2011 Lady Tigers were the apex of the Bolduans’ tenure. The team matched the ’05 team with a 29-3 record, but outdid that team at state. After beating Miller in the region finals for the second straight year, the Lady Tigers beat Elk Point-Jefferson in the first round and then battled for a 3-2 win over Aberdeen Roncalli to finish in third place at the 2011 State A Volleyball Tournament.
The ’12 team came back to beat Miller in the region championship game, go 24-8 and finish sixth in state.
Last year was Millers’ turn to turn the table. The Rustlers ended the Lady Tigers’ season at 18-10 in the second round of the Region 6A tournament.
The Mobridge/Mobridge-Pollock Tournament gave Lady Tigers fans their first chance to see the girls in extensive action early in each season. Bolduan’s teams always put on a good show for the home crowd. In 10 tourneys, the Lady Tigers won five titles and had an overall record of 35-7. You like seeing your girls win on their home court? Under the Bolduans, the Lady Tigers went 104-26 at Scherr-Howe Arena and Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium. That’s an 80 percent win ratio.
How about 217 wins, seven district championships, six region titles and six trips to the state tournament? No Tiger team in any sport has had a decade like that.
The Bolduans will be missed, but they will not be forgotten. Thanks Keri and Rick, you had one hell of a run.
