Dorothy Metz enjoyed working


Dorothy Metz, 88, Bowdle, died Thursday, March 8, 2012, at the Bowdle Nursing Home.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 12, 2012, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bowdle. Interment was at Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Lien Funeral Home of Bowdle.

Visitation and prayer service were Sunday at Lien Funeral Home.

Dorothy Martha Giedt, daughter of Katherine (Scherbenski) and Henry Giedt, was born in Edmunds County near Tolstoy on July 30, 1923. She was raised on her parents’ farm two miles southwest of Bowdle and attended Odessa Rural School through eighth grade. She attended Bowdle High School, graduating with the Class of 1941.

Throughout high school, she was employed at Jones Drug and following her graduation she clerked at the AAA office in Ipswich.

She married Ernest Metz at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowdle on August 29, 1943. They settled on Ernest’s parents’ farm seven and a half miles northwest of Bowdle in Walworth County.

In the 1950s, Dorothy established Metz Floral. Dorothy and Ernest moved into Bowdle in December 1976 and she continued operating the flower shop until August 1979. In September 1979 she earned her life and health line and sold insurance until 2000.

Dorothy enjoyed working with people and keeping busy, so when she retired from the insurance business she became a sales representative for Avon Cosmetics, a vocation she continued until September 2009. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and Ladies’ Aide. Dorothy was a 4-H leader for 26 years and a Farmer’s Union Youth leader for 25 years. In the ‘60s, she and Ernest belonged to the Bowdle Square Dance Club. She also belonged to the ABC Extension Club, the WALCO Extension Club, and was a member of the Bowdle Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, and knitting.

Dorothy is survived by five sons, Ernie J. (Pauline) Metz of Bowdle, Paul (Rosemary) Metz of Goodwin, Dean (Debbie) Metz of Sioux Falls, Michael (Kathy) Metz of Aberdeen, and Garry (Monica) Metz of Ellendale, N.D.; one daughter, Ruth Ann (Don) Claeys of Firestone, Colo.; one sister, Eloise Huber of Napa, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father on Aug. 22, 1977, her mother on Jan. 25, 1993, her husband on Sept. 4, 2002, and two brothers, Wardell and Lester (Dick) Giedt.

Honorary bearers were all the people attending the service.

Casket bearers were Keith Metz of Neosho, Wis., Joe Claeys of Denver, Colo., Adam Metz of Watertown, Ryan Metz of Socorre, N.M., Nathan Metz of Watertown, and Tara Hack of Grand Forks, N.D.

Organist was Barbara Gullerud and soloist was Ruth Ann Claeys. Ushers were Blake Eisenbeisz, Quentin Walz, Randy Giedt, and Steve Giedt.
