The Dupree Tigers capped a 22-4 season by beating Wolsey-Wessington 57-52 for seventh place at the State B Basketball Tournament in Aberdeen on Saturday.

After a couple tough losses, the Tigers were able to get their pressure game going in the seventh-place contest. The Tigers forced 10 Warbird turnovers in the first half. They used the defense to create an offense that forged at 32-23 halftime lead. An 8-0 run in the second quarter put the Tigers up 27-16. Nate Widow and Cooper Wall fueled the run with back-to-back three-pointers. The Tigers’ lead could have been bigger than nine points at the half, but Wolsey-Wessington hit buzzer-beating shots at the end of the first and second quarters.

The Warbirds had a 7-0 run in the third quarter that cut the Tigers’ lead to three points at 37-34 before Chisum Farlee ended the run with a basket. Widow ended with quarter with a pickpocket steal and basket as Dupree led 43-36 after three quarters.

Widow stayed hot and scored the Tigers’ first nine points of the fourth quarter. When his run ended, the Tigers led 51-45 with 1:47 to play. Kash Deal gave Dupree a 54-48 lead with 1:12 to play before Farlee capped the win with three of four free throws down the stretch.

Widow led Dupree with a game-high 20 points. Wall and Deal scored 13 points each. Wall scored all of his points in the first half, including hitting three three-pointers. Farlee added eight points as the starting five did all the scoring for the Tigers.

Jalen Boomsma led Wolsey-Wessington with 13 points. Lorenzo Williams added 10 points. Hayden Hooks scored eight points and pulled down a game-high six rebounds.

Castlewood got out quick with long-range bombs in defeating Dupree 76-60 in the first round of consolation play on Friday.
Gunnar Johnson was the main culprit as he hit four of Castlewood’s eight three-pointers in the first half. The outside shooting gave Castlewood a 35-21 lead at the half.

Johnson opened the second half with his fifth three-pointer propelling Castlewood to a 10-4 run to start the second half and open a 20-point lead.

While the Tigers finished the game shooting 52 percent, making 24 of 46 shots, they could not catch up after Castlewood’s fast start, especially considering that Castlewood never cooled off and shot better than 62 percent for the game, including hitting nine of 18 from beyond the arc.

Widow did his part with a game-high 25 points, while adding four rebounds and four steals. Farlee scored 11 points and Deal scored nine. Wall added seven points and four boards.

Jordan Feyerisen led Castlewood with 21 points. Johnson finished with 17 points. Once the outside was opened up, the Warriors went inside to Lucas Ching for 15 points.

The ball would not go in the hole early when the Tigers hit the floor for their first game at state in 28 years. After scoring 73 points a game during the season, Dupree managed just five points in the first quarter and 13 in the first half as they dropped a 51-31 game to Sully Buttes in the opening round on Thursday.

Sully Buttes did not fare much better from the field, but managed to take a 21-13 lead in the first half.
The Chargers still had a nine-point lead after three quarters, when Jordan Lamb took the game over. Lamb scored 11 points and hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter as Sully Buttes outscored the Tigers 17-6 over the final eight minutes.

Lamb finished the contest with a game-high 25 points. Conner Uhlir commanded the inside for 12 points and nine rebounds. Jalen Lamb added 10 points and seven boards.

Widow led the Tigers with 13 points and seven rebounds. Deal added eight points.

After scoring 58 points in three games, Widow was named to the All-Tournament team. Joining the Dupree junior are Wyatt Krogman and Nic Waln of state champion White River, Dennis DeNui and Trevor Jacobson of Viborg-Hurley, Nick Alberts and Kyle Johnson of Langford, Jordan Lamb and Conner Uhlir of Sully Buttes, Jacob Bartscher and Jordan Marquart of Hanson and Jordan Feyerisen of Castlewood.
