Bill Mott wins Eclipse Award

Mobridge native Bill Mott won trainer of the year at the Eclipse Awards in Hollywood, Calif., on Monday.

The 58-year-old, Hall of Fame trainer, had one of his better years in 2011 with purse earnings of $10,731, 249. It was his highest total since 1996 and the third highest of his career. Mott won the Eclipse Award in 1996 after winning it in 1995.

A big finish to the 2011 season put Mott over the top for the award. He won six of his 15 graded stakes in November. He capped the season with Royal Delta winning Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic followed by Drosselmeyer pulling off an upset win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
