4×800 team takes fifth at Howard Wood Dakota Relays

The Tiger 4×800-meter relay team made some noise with a fifth-place finish at the 96th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays held Friday and Saturday in Sioux Falls.
“I think going down there and competing with all the different states involved, the team did great,” said assistant coach Stacy Bauer. “We shaved time off every relay or maintained what we have done. We were pushed and it paid off to be there and see that kind of competition.”
The team of Holden Eisemann, Logan Vetch, Blaise Thompson and Caelan McCollam shaved nearly five seconds off their previous best time to take fifth place at the prestigious meet. Their fifth-place time was 8:47.9. They entered the meet with a previous best of 8:52.09.
Race winner Sioux Falls Christian won the title in an impressive 8:24.19.
The Lady Tigers did not have a relay team place, but ran two relays in times that rank in the program’s all-time top 10.
The 1600-meter medley relay team of Reagan Weisbeck, Ryli Thompson, Mariah Goehring and Heidi Olson came in just 11th, but in the process, ran the third fastest time in Lady Tiger track history. The girls crossed the finish line at 4:28.38, a full seven seconds faster than their previous best.
The all-time Lady Tiger record is 4:22.07 run by Mandy Shillingstad, Kelly Palmer, Jenny Wales and Jody Rabenberg in 1991. That same foursome also holds the second spot. They ran 4:26.4 in 1990.
Weisbeck, Thompson, Goehring and Landyn Henderson took 13th in the 4×200 with a time of 1:52.44, which is the ninth fastest time in Lady Tiger history. They are just three seconds off the top time of 1:49.35 run by Alexa Schaefbauer, Hayley Borah, Cass Heumiller and Geneva Wollman in 2016.
The girls’ 4×400-meter relay team of Goehring, Henderson, Thompson and Olson took more than eight seconds off their previous best, but their 4:20.42 was only good for 11th place.
While not placing, two of the other three Tiger teams ran to season-best times. The 4×400 team of McCollam, Bryston Goehring, Cayden Eisemann and Brady Bauer just missed medaling. They came in ninth at 3:39.01, besting their previous top time by more than a second. The 4×200 team of Goehring, Eisemann, Bauer and Trent Schmeichel took more than two seconds off their previous best, running 1:37.27 and taking 15th. The medley team of Bauer, Schmeichel, Goehring and Holden Eisemann ran 3:53.71 for 13th place.

Area success
Area schools found success both on the track and in the jumping pits.
Hank Kraft of Timber Lake launched himself 43-2 to take fifth in triple jump. He also ran with Ian Beyer, Jayce Lawrence and Brady Sandquist on the fourth-place medley relay team. The Panthers ran 3:51.42.
Alec Meier of North Central tore around the track in 50.69 seconds to take eighth in the 400. He anchored the Thunder medley relay team that finished just ahead of Timber Lake in third place with a time of 3:51.04.
The Lady Wolverines of Herreid/Selby Area took eighth place in the 4×100-meter relay and just missed medaling with a ninth-place finish in the 4×200. Medaling for the Wolverines in a time of 54.43 seconds were McKayla Hanson, Sophia Von Wald, Breanna Jochim and Annaliese Goehring. The same foursome took ninth in the 4×200.
