Ball Five: Lady Tigers will be home for Region 6A opener

By Jay Davis

There will be playoff basketball at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gym on Tuesday, but I can’t tell you for certain just which team the Lady Tigers will host.
After talking with coach Lindsey Kramer, the seeding points (with one game remaining) look to favor the Lady Tigers over Miller for the third spot in the Region 6A pecking order.
The Lady Tigers finish at region leader Winner (15-4) on Friday. Miller is 7-11 and ends the regular season at 17-2 Highmore-Harrold on Thursday.
As of right now, the Lady Tigers have 39.95 seed points. Miller has 39.58. Things should stay status quo, but we won’t know for sure until each team’s final game has been played.
Now, should the Lady Tigers upend Winner, there is even an outside shot at our girls moving up to second and securing a first-round bye. Cheyenne-Eagle Butte is 11-8 with 40.63 seed points. They finish the season hosting Timber Lake on Thursday. We’ll say, “Go Panthers,” but with this much on the line, I can’t see the Braves letting Timber Lake come into their house and pulling off the upset.
Until things change, we can expect Crow Creek to enter the House on the Hill come Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. If the Lady Tigers can get a win there (they beat the Chieftains 70-26 in Stephan this season), they will advance to the second round and get their third crack at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Thursday.
While we’re talking about the region standings, the Tigers are in a strange place for a 11-7 team with 41.06 seed points. Region 6A is a monster this year. With Winner (17-1, 45.06), Chamberlain (13-5, 43.28), Cheyenne-Eagle Butte (12-6, 42.5) and Miller (12-6, 42.0) all ahead of them, the Tigers are in fifth place and are probably going to hit the playoffs on the road this year.
There are seven other regions in Class A. The Tigers would be hosting a first-round game in each of the other seven. They would get a first-round bye in two regions. There are, in fact, 55 teams in Class A. The Tigers have the 21st highest seed. Take away our region and just 17 teams have more seed points than the Tigers. Average that out and the Tigers would sit between second and third in most of the regions.
But, alas the Tigers are looking up at four teams and will probably stay that way. Fourth-place Miller beat Faulkton Area last night and finishes  against 3-12 Stanley County and 10-7 Highmore-Harrold. The Rustlers will be the favorite against both Class B teams.
Of course the Tigers could put a chink the expected finish of the region standings by finishing the season with wins over Winner and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte. If they do that, we’ll just have to revisit the boys’ possible scenarios next week.
