Brady Spiry takes fifth at State B wrestling tourney

By Jay Davis

Brady Spiry rounded out his high school wrestling career by taking fifth place at 220 pounds at the State B Wrestling Tournament at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen on Saturday.
“I’m really happy with how Brady wrestled,” said coach Spencer Novotny.
Spiry defeated Robert Hoiten of McCook Central-Montrose 3-1 in overtime to earn his fifth-place finish. Each wrestler had managed just an escape after six minutes. In the overtime, Hoiten tried a throw on Brady, but the Tiger senior scrambled and got behind Hoiten for the winning takedown.
Spiry opened his tourney with a 1:55 pin over Jimmy Sharkey of Winner. He was sent to the loser’s bracket after suffering a 3:01 pin at the hands of Ryley Ostbye of Canton in the second round. Needing a win to get back to the medal rounds, Spiry powered his way with a 14-0 major decision over Blake Severson of Garretson. A 5-2 win over Matt Muth of Britton-Hecla gave Spiry a chance to get back to the third-place match, but in the next round he lost a 5-1 match to Brody Peterson of Lemmon-McIntosh. Peterson went on to beat Ostbye in the third-place match.
Sophomores David Jensen and Chance Schoenhard did not make it to Saturday’s wrestling, but the young Tigers did get their feet wet and learned about competing at the state level.
Jensen picked up one win at 182 pounds. After falling 4-0 to Turner Blasius of Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes in the first round, Jensen turned Zach Sumner of Aberdeen on his back in the third period to win a 4-2 match. He ran into Reece Jensen of Harding County and fell 8-0 in the next round.
“David had a good tournament,” said Novotny. “He wrestled a good third period (against Sumner).”
Both wrestlers who beat Jensen placed. Blasius took fifth and Jensen finished eighth.
Schoenhard could not pick up a win at 195 pounds.
“But he did get his feet wet,” said Novotny. “He learned he has to get better at wrestling on his feet at the state level.”
Schoenhard was right there in both of his matches. Andrew Semmler of Parkston beat him 9-8 in the first match. He lost 15-7 to Caleb VanWhye of Canton in the second round.
Schoenhard did follow his teammates in one respect. Both wrestlers who beat him placed. Semmler finished fourth and VanWhye seventh.
