Carson Keller did not waste any time, qualifying for state in discus at the season-opening American Legion Relays in Pierre on Thursday.
Keller sent the discus a state-qualifying 144 feet, 7 inches, surpassing the needed mark of 140-5. His effort gave him a fifth-place finish. Jack Maher of Pierre won the event at 152-8. Keller was the only thrower to place who wasn’t from a Class AA school.
Two Tiger relays medaled, both finished eighth. The 4×200-meter team of Reese Cerney, Caden Halsey, Tucson Freeman and Nathan Bauer ran 1:38.83. The 4×800-meter team of Zane Reinert, Gabe Jerome, Cayden Eisemann and Kregen Norder ran 9:26.19.
Bauer raced to 15th in the 200 with a time of 24.83 seconds. The 200-meter field had 57 entrants. He was the sixth among Class A runners.
Haley Borah led the Lady Tigers with a 15th-place finish in the 400. Her time of 1:05.67 was just one second from the top eight in a crowded field of 46 runners. She was fourth fastest Class A runner in the field.
Coach Cody Stotz said the Tigers and Lady Tigers did a good job, considering the American Legion Relays are the toughest meet they will compete in all year. The meet had 13 of the state’s 18 Class AA teams.
The American Legion Relays featured Class AA teams Aberdeen Central, Brandon Valley, Brookings, Huron, Mitchell, Pierre, Rapid City Central, Rapid City Stevens, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Sioux Falls Washington, Sturgis, Watertown and Yankton, Class A schools Mobridge-Pollock, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Hill City, Redfield/Doland, Stanley County, St. Thomas More and Winner, and Dupree from Class B.
