Coin Week activities planned

By Robert Maisch

The Bridge City Coin and Stamp Club members laid out plans for the 90th annual National Coin Week activities, April 21 through 27, at their meeting on April 11.
The 2013 theme is “Buffalo Nickel Centennial: Black Diamond Shines Again.” The buffalo nickel was issued from 1913 to 1938.
Members will be placing exhibits at the Chamber of Commerce Office, Dacotah Bank, Great Western Bank, Wells Fargo Bank and the A. H. Brown Library. At each exhibit location there will be entry forms for a trivia contest about America the Beautiful Quarters. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third places.
The Library will have a coin design contest for youngsters in kindergarten through second and third through fifth-grade categories. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in both categories. Every entry will receive at least a foreign coin. Rules and a wooden disc to draw design entries are available at the Library.
Karen Brick of KOLY will use hobby questions for the Dairy Queen Trivia contest during the week. The club will provide additional prizes.
The Timber Lake Area Museum invited several club members at the museum’s accessions meeting where area residents could view prospective donations and express their feeling of items that would meet the museum’s mission and relate to local area history. The Mobridge club members each presented their own collecting interests and then remained to help visitors identify some of the collectibles they brought to be looked at. Virgil Binfet covered philetelics (stamps and postal covers), Lyle Walth covered numismatics (money) and Robert Maisch covered exonumia (tokens and medals).
The next meeting of the Bridge City Coin and Stamp Club is May 2, 7 p.m., in the community room of the Mobridge-Pollock High School.
