Cowboys, cowgirls take home more than $150,000 in prize money at 75th anniversary Sitting Bull Stampede


Jade Blackwell of Rapid City rides Prom Night to an 89 point victory at the 75th Sitting Bull Stampede. His winning ride was the final saddle bronc ride on the final day of the rodeo on July 4.

The 75th anniversary of the Sitting Bull Stampede was celebrated with nearly 1,100 entrants competing for more than $150,000 in prize money on July 2, 3 and 4.

Rapid City, South Dakota, cowboys won both bucking horse contests.

Jade Blackwell wowed the July 4 crowd with an 89-point ride on Prom Night. Blackwell was the last saddle bronc rider of the rodeo. Blackwell earned a $2,730 for his eight-second ride.

Jamie Howlett rode to 85.5 points atop Yankee Rose to win bareback riding and take home $2,730. Howlett helped kick off the party on July 2.

South Dakota cowboys fared well in saddle bronc riding. Cole Elshere of Faith took second, riding to South Point to 88 points and $2,093. Taygen Schuelke of Newell and Chet Smith of Rapid City tied for sixth and Kash Deal of Dupree took eighth.

Howlett was the only South Dakota cowboy to place in bareback riding. Taylor Broussard of Estherwood, Louisiana, took second, earning $2,093 for an 84.5-point ride on Bay Bell.

Shane Hanchey, the 2013 world champion from Sulphur, Louisiana, won tie-down roping. His 8.2-second run was worth $3,554. Luke Potter of Maple City, Kansas, and Zack Jongbloed of Iowa, Louisiana, tied for second where 8.3-second runs were worth $2,993 each. Two South Dakota cowboys got in the money. Clint Kindred of Oral took fourth, while Myles Kensey of Iona was part of a three-way tie for sixth.

Two cowgirls went under two seconds in the second season of ladies breakaway roping. Jackie Crawford of Stephenville, Texas, won the title with a time of 1.8 seconds and picked up $3,372. Lari Dee Guy of Abilene, Texas, went 1.9 seconds to earn $2,933. South Dakota cowgirls Lacey Hewitt of Whitewood and Brooklyn Hanson of Faith got in the money. Hewitt was in a five-way tie for third and Hanson was in a two-way tie for eighth.

J.D. Struxnes of Milan, Minnesota, and Justin Kimsey of Kennewick, Washington, tied for the steer wrestling title. Both cowboys had 4.1-second runs and each cowboy earned $3,401. Billy Bolden of Oglala was the only South Dakota cowboy in the money. He tied for fourth.

Big money was there to be made in team roping in an event with 252 entries. Levi Lord of Sturgis and teammate Nelson Wyatt of Clanton, Alabama, won the lion’s share with their winning time of 4.5 seconds, securing $4,036 each. Rhett Anderson of Annabella, Utah, and Austin Rogers of Crescent, Oklahoma, took second at 4.7 seconds to earn $3,611 each.

Jessie Telford of Caldwell, Idaho, won the biggest check of the rodeo, beating 253 opponents to win the barrel racing. Telford ran the course in 18.11 seconds and took home $5,884. Jessica Routier of Buffalo was just two hundredths of a second back. Her second-place time of 18.13 seconds was worth $4,707.

Reid Oftedahl of Pemberton, Minnesota, made the July 3 rodeo a hit for the fans with his 91.5-point ride on Grey Mouse to win the bull riding. Oftedahl earned $2,961. Austin Manley of Ash Grove, Missouri, took second with an 89.5-point ride atop EvenFlow to earn $2,270.

Jongbloed, the Iowa, Louisiana, cowboy, used his $2,993 earned in tie-down roping to capture the all-round title for cowboys entered in more than one event.
