Leftists are seeking to wrest control of the Democratic Party and most of our institutions from the control of liberals. The vast difference between leftists and traditional liberals is explained by Dennis Prager in the article, “Leftism Is Not Liberalism.” Their important differences explain much about our modern society. This column explains some of those differences.
Race is one of the obvious moral differences between liberalism and leftism. Traditional liberals spent a life time, often successfully, of encouraging racial integration. They believed that the color of our skin is insignificant and that only racists would consider it a valid reason to divide us. In contrast, the left believes that the idea of race being insignificant is itself racist. “The University of California officially regards the statement ‘There is only one race, the human race’ as racist.” Leftists now seek Black dormitories, Student Unions and graduations on campuses. The left believes that responding to “Black Lives Matter” by saying “All Lives Matter” is bigoted, racist and insensitive.
Liberals were always for capitalism, even if they thought it should be more regulated and required to contribute more to alleviating the poor than conservatives. They saw capitalism as the freest, most prosperous economic system. Leftists oppose capitalism and generally support some form of socialism.
Liberals believed in nation-states, our country, its sovereignty and our borders. Open borders would have been as objectionable to a liberal as a conservative. The left has contempt and opposes nationalism seeing in it “intellectual and moral primitivism at best, and the road to fascism at worst.” They favor class solidarity not national solidarity. They see restricted borders as nationalism, xenophobia and racism.
Liberals knew America wasn’t perfect but they venerated America and Western Civilization. “Watch American films from the 1930s through the 1950s and you will be watching overtly patriotic, America-celebrating films–virtually all produced, directed and acted in by liberals.” The left, including the left around the world, thinks America is “a racist, sexist, violent, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophobic country.” Before inauguration, Barak Obama said, “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” You may claim you love your fiancé but don’t tell them you are planning on “fundamentally transforming” them just before your marriage.
Leftism is a powerful force in America that would transform our country in ways that are both opposite and hostile to our historical, conservative and liberal past.
