Defensive switch leads Tigers to 64-43 win over rival Midgets

By Jay Davis

Switching up the defense and shutting down McLaughlin’s long-range bombing turned things around as the Tigers used a big second half to run away from the Midgets 64-43 at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Tuesday.
“That was the first time we’ve seen a team overload the court with perimeter players,” said coach Tim Frederick. “We made some adjustments and in the second half we closed them down pretty good.”
The first half was back and forth for 16 minutes with five ties and six lead changes. The Tigers scored last and held a 32-28 lead at the intermission.
The second half was a different story. The Tigers started the half with an 8-2 run to take a double-digit lead at 40-30. The Midgets were never closer than seven points the rest of the quarter.
Mobridge-Pollock started the fourth quarter with a pair of three-pointers, taking a 54-38 lead that would not be threatened the rest of the way.
Rebounding was a big key for the Tigers in the second half. After the Midgets outrebounded the Tigers in the first half, Mobridge-Pollock held a 15-7 rebounding edge in the second half.
“We expect the first half is going to be a battle,” said Frederick. “We try to create a situation where our pressure breaks down the other team.”
The pressure did its job on this night. The Tigers held the Midgets to 15 points in the second half, including just four points in the fourth quarter.
Mitch Heumiller beat the McLaughlin defense for 13 field goals and a game-high 31 points, adding five steals and three assists. Jason Hill had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. He added three steals and two blocked shots.
Reece Wientjes scored 10 points and grabbed five boards. Mason Keller scored eight points and Preston Frederick added four points, five rebounds and four assists.
Even though the Tigers shot 52 percent from the field and 54 percent from inside the arc, Frederick thought that a couple extra passes could have made the shooting percentage even higher.
“We have to do a lot better job executing our offense,” said Frederick. “We have to be willing to make the extra pass and make everyone a part.”
Payton Tiokasin led McLaughlin with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocked shots. Patrick Running Hawk scored nine points and Clifford One Feather scored eight. Tristan Flying Horse added four points and five steals.

Groton Area
Groton Area used scoring spurts to gain the lead and refused to relinquish it in dealing the Tigers a 56-38 loss on Groton on Saturday.
Groton Area used a 10-2 run in the first quarter to take a 20-12 lead. A 6-0 run, all on free throws, pushed the lead to double digits. The Tigers were looking up at that double-digit lead the entire second half and were never able to make a run at Groton Area.
A huge gap in foul shooting disrupted the Tiger effort for the second straight night. Groton Area was 13 of 18 from the charity stripe. The Tigers shot just two free throws in the second quarter.
“It’s not so much what the other teams are doing right now,” said Frederick. “We’re playing pretty good defense right now, but we’re committing too many fouls. We have to play defense with our feet, not with our hands.”
The Tigers also struggled putting the ball in the hoop with just 14 field goals. Eight of the 14 field goals were three-pointers.
“We’re shooting better from threes than from twos right now,” said Frederick.
Keller and Frederick hit three treys each while combining for 24 points. Keller scored 13 and Frederick 11. Heumiller scored eight points. Reece Wientjes added four points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Reilly Ell led Groton Area with a game-high 17 points. He hit five three-pointers, including three straight late in the third quarter. Mason Madsen scored 12 points and grabbed 10 boards. Lucas Sternhagen added 12 points.

Miller
The Tigers rallied from a nine-point deficit only to drop a 43-37 game to Miller at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Friday.
The Tigers trailed 37-28 midway through the fourth quarter when they went on a 9-0 run. A Keller steal and basket cut the lead to 37-32. Frederick hit a two with 1:50 to play, and after a Miller free throw miss, hit a three-pointer with 1:31 on the clock to tie the game at 37-all.
But the Tigers would not score again as Miller hit six of nine free throws down the stretch to pull off the road win.
Heumiller led the Tigers with 17 points. Frederick scored eight and Jason Hill scored seven.
Part of the Tigers’ struggle putting points on the board came from failure to convert on the inside.
“Part of our issue is we’re missing a lot of bunnies,” said Frederick. “We need to start converting under the basket.”
Hayden Herman led Miller with 14 points. He hit 12 of 14 free throws, including four straight to end the game. Preston Blackwell scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
“I’m happy with the team,” said Frederick. “It’s coming, even though we didn’t get a win this weekend.”

Crow Creek
The Tigers will host the 2-7 Crow Creek Chieftains on Friday as part of a Tiger/Lady Tiger doubleheader.
This will be just the 13th meeting between the Tigers and Chieftains. Crow Creek won seven of the first 10, but the Tigers have won three in a row, including a 63-51 win in Stephan last season.
The Tigers will entertain the Standing Rock Warriors on Tuesday. The Tigers won both meetings last year, 74-62 in Ft. Yates and 70-54 at home, and hold a 17-12 record in the all-time series.
