Dorothy Miner was Christian woman


Funeral services for Dorothy Miner, 83, of Whitehorse, were held Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Whitehorse, with Mother Margaret Watson, Rev. Norman Blue Coat, Pastor Richard Nultemeier and the Episcopal lay readers officiating. Music was provided by Lloyd Thompson and Wakiyan Maza Drum Group.
Burial followed at the church cemetery with Terris Thompson, George Marshall, Vern Miner, Sage Miner, Justin Miner, Brandon Miner, Chaz Gabe, Anthony Little Dog, Franklin Jewett, Luke Eagleman, William Miner IV and K.C. Buckley serving as casket bearers.
Dorothy entered the spirit world March 1, 2014, in Mobridge.
Dorothy Mamie White Dog Miner, “Apah’a” (On the Hill), was born June 2, 1930, at Cheyenne Agency to Paul White Dog and Lucille Jones. She grew up in Whitehorse, where she was raised by her grandmother, Nellie White Dog, after she lost her mother Lucille in 1932 and her father Paul in 1937. Dorothy attended school at White Horse Day School, Old Cheyenne Agency Boarding School and Pierre Indian School.
In 1950 she married Bill Miner, Jr., making their home in Whitehorse. To this union, 10 children were born. Years later, she married Orville Buster Traversie, living in Timber Lake. No children were born to this union. She later had a child with Melvin Jewett. In Dorothy’s early days, she loved to ride horseback with her friends Clarece Miner, Vallie LaPlant, Donna Zitsman and Lavern (LaPlant) Cummings.
She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, watching them play basketball, football and cheerleading, and also loved going to powwows.
She was a Christian woman, believing strongly in the Bible and attending church. She belonged to the Women’s Auxiliary at Emmanuel Episcopal in Whitehorse. The women would sew blankets, bake and have a lot of other church activities to raise money for the church. Dorothy also attended religious Lakota ceremonies.
When her health started to fail, she stayed home and read books and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
In 2011, she began residing at Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge. On March 1, 2014, she entered the spirit world with her loved ones at her bedside.
Those left to mourn her passing include her sons, Sheldon (Eleanor) Miner and William Miner, III, all of Eagle Butte, and David (Willamette) Miner of Whitehorse; four daughters, Patsy (Bob) Marshall of Promise, Pam (Stephen) Red Buffalo of Wagner, Paula (Grady) Murray of Lovington, Ill., and Colleen (Donny) Swan of Whitehorse; three adopted sons, Chaz (Beatrice) Gabe of White Horse, Anthony Little Dog of Little Eagle, and Tony (Michelle) Aungie of Wagner; three adopted daughters, Cheryl Skonak of Chicago, Ill., Katherine Lilly of Ann Arbor, Mich., and the late Verna (Fielder) Ducheneaux. She also raised six of her grandchildren, Roletta Miner of Tenn., Justin (Joni) Miner of Mobridge, Sarah Miner and Sage (Desiree) Miner all of Whitehorse, Brandon Miner of Timber Lake and Vern (Hattie) Miner of Wagner. Also surviving are a total of 59 grandchildren, 118 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Paul White Dog and Lucille Jones; grandparents, Joseph and Nellie White Dog; sister, Maxine Swan; sons, Bruce and Boyd Miner; daughters, Connie (Miner) Hatto and Marilyn Rose Miner; half-brother, Ralph Miner; grandchildren, DJ LeBeau, Joseph Berenek, Donnie “Chaos” Swan and Raelene Traversie; great-grandchild, Gabby Flying By; and niece, Francine Kennedy.
