Early penalties, hot Sisseton QB lead to Tiger loss

By Jay Davis
An early batch of penalties by the Tigers and a hot Redmen quarterback put Mobridge-Pollock in the hole early in a 40-7 loss to Sisseton in Sisseton on Friday.
“We didn’t come our ready to play,” said coach Dan Merkel. “With the penalties we just shot ourselves in the foot.”
Sisseton struck quickly behind quarterback Hunter Medenwald. On his second pass attempt he found Logan Grimm open for a 56-yard touchdown pass. The Redmen put the first points on the board with 10:22 left in the first quarter.
The Tigers moved the ball into Redmen territory on their first possession, but a holding penalty stalled the drive. Matt Lepke was intercepted by Grimm on third and long.
The Tigers looked to have Sisseton stopped on the next possession, but an encroachment penalty set up third and manageable. Medenwald responded by hitting Andrew Fitz for a 38-yard touchdown, making it 14-0 Sisseton with 6:13 left in the opening quarter.
More penalties beset the Tigers. A block in the back stopped the next drive and a late hit on the punt return gave Sisseton good field position. Four plays later, another late hit gave the Redmen a first down deep in Tiger territory. Medenwald took advantage for his third touchdown pass of the first quarter, hitting Dustin Moshier for a 12-yard score. The two-point conversion made it 22-0 with 3:19 left in the quarter.
The Tigers drove deep into Sisseton territory on the ensuing drive, but the charge to put points on the board was thwarted when the Redmen stopped the Tigers on fourth down.
Medenwald had one more drive to cap his hot streak. After hitting Fitz for a 36-yard gain, Medenwald found Moshier on a screen pass for his fourth touchdown pass in five possessions, giving Sisseton a 28-0 lead at the 4:05 mark of the second quarter.
At that point, Medenwald was eight of 10 for 156 yards and four TDs.
Merkel said the Tiger defense was playing pretty well for the most part, but after making a few stops would give up the long plays.
“We’re getting teams in third and long,” said Merkel, “and they’re not just getting first downs, they’re scoring touchdowns.”
Sisseton took a 34-0 lead in the third quarter when Medenwald capped a drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
The Tigers finally made a big play on defense on Sisseton’s next possession. The Redmen were looking at fourth and 13 from the Tiger 35 when Carson Keller burst through the line and sacked Medenwald.
The Tigers responded by going 58 yards in three plays. Lepke found Gary Wollman for a 36-yard gain and on the next play found a big hole in the middle and scampered 22 yards for the touchdown. The Jeff Kemnitz extra point made the score 34-7 with 5:32 left in the third quarter.
After the teams battled back and forth for a couple possessions, Sisseton iced the game with Medenwald’s fifth touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. The final touchdown came on a 15-yard pass to Fitz.
Despite a fourth straight loss suffered by the Tigers, Merkel saw some positives for his team to move forward with.
“Keller and Isaac Olson played well at defensive tackle,” said Merkel. “We tackled well. Jason Gerry, Killian Warner and Jeff Kemnitz had strong games. We ran the ball better. Cecil Baker had a good game for the offensive line.”

Jones County/White River

The Tigers will take to the road for the second straight week in search of their first victory of the year. The Tigers travel to Murdo to take on Jones County/White River. A first-year co-op, Jones County/White River is 1-2 on the season with a 44-6 win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and losses to Chamberlain and Wagner.
This being a new co-op, Merkel said the team does not know a whole a lot about them, but it is up to his Tigers to play winning football on Friday.
“We have to get some fire going,” said Merkel. “We have to capitalize when they make mistakes and we have to get physical.”
