The Eureka Selby (ES) Teeners played in the 13-14 VFW State Baseball Tournament in Garretson over the past weekend. They played in two very close games but could not pull out a win.
In the first game, Parker defeated ES in a back and forth game that ended at 11-5. Parker scored the first in the in top half of the third inning and ES bounced back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single by Emmitt Bohle. Parker took the lead back in the fourth with two runs and ES was shut down to make it 3-2 after four innings. Parker added two more runs in the fifth, but ES was able to answer with three runs in the bottom half to tie the score at 5-5 after five innings. The top half of the sixth is when Parker made its move, scoring six runs on three hits, six walks and three errors. ES was held to no runs in the last two innings to make the final score 11-5.
Trevor Begeman led the pitching effort with four innings and was followed by Jackson Kunz and Karson Vander Vorst. Begemann, Bohle and John Deurmier had all the hits for ES.
Game two was against Lake Norden and was also a tight game with both teams having trouble scoring runs. Jackson Kunz singled in the first inning and Bohle knocked him in with a single to make in 1-0 after one inning. Lake Norden bounced back with two runs in the second and ES answered with one to tie the score at 2-2 after two innings. ES was only able to score one more run in the fourth inning while Lake Norden put up two more in the third and one in the fifth to make the final score 5-3.
Collin Fiedler pitched all six innings for ES, allowing three hits and one walk, while striking out six. Nick Burns led the offense with two hits. Kunz, Vander Vorst, Begeman and Bohle had one hit each.
“Overall, both games were close and the level of competition looked pretty close across the board,” said coach Rich Fiedler.
Platte went to on to win the state title with an 8-2 win over Kimball-White Lake in the championship game.
