Fifth-ranked Lady Tigers top McLaughlin

The Lady Tigers, newly ranked-fifth in the latest South Dakota Sportswriters Association Class A poll, raced to a 3-0 win over McLaughlin in McLaughlin on Monday.
The match was all Lady Tigers 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.
“The girls played well tonight,” said coach Rose Henderson. “We hit the ball hard and played solid defense.”
The Lady Tigers scored from the front with 40 kills and from the back with 10 aces. Lauren Henderson was 22 for 23 with 13 kills to pace the attacking. Kylee Wagner had nine kills on 22 of 27 hitting and Grace Wollman had seven kills on 11 of 13 hitting.
Cassi Heumiller was perfect on 62 sets with 34 assists.
“Cassi did a great job of evenly distributing the ball to the hitters,” said Henderson.”
Alexa Schaefbauer led the serving with a 14 for 15, three-ace match. Henderson had three aces on nine of 10 serving and Heumiller had two aces and an 11 for 12 night.
Heumiller, Schaefbauer and Sam Good Shield led the defense, combining for 40 of the team’s 74 digs. Heumiller had 14, while Schaefbauer and Good Shield had 13 each.
The Lady Tigers were as much in charge in the junior varsity match, winning 25-13, 25-14.
“Both the JV and varsity did a good job of taking care of business,” said Henderson.

Timber Lake

The Lady Tigers host Timber Lake on Thursday, starting off two days of homecoming sports events. Volleyball starts at 5:30 p.m.
The 19-2 Lady Tigers and 8-10 Lady Panthers have been meeting at the net since the 1997-98 season. The Lady Tigers won that match and have been in control of the series ever since. In 35 matches, the Lady Tigers are 29-4-2 against the Lady Panthers. Mobridge-Pollock beat Timber Lake twice last season, 2-0 in the Mobridge-Pollock Invitational and 3-1 in Timber Lake. Mobridge-Pollock has won the last two and nine of the last 10 in the series.
The Lady Tigers travel to Aberdeen on Tuesday to take on the 6-12 Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers.
The Lady Tigers and Cavaliers have been playing since 1989 when the Tigers edged the Cavs 3-2. Going into the 31st meeting between the two squads, the Lady Tigers are 17-13 in the series, including a 3-1 win in Mobridge last season.
