Foster grandparents honored at annual luncheon

Submitted article
A recognition luncheon in honor of the Foster Grandparents from the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Reservations was held on Aug. 25 at the Grand River Casino in the River’s Edge Restaurant.
The theme for this year’s recognition was Connecting Across Generations. Foster Grandparent Program is celebrating its 50th anniversary nationally this year. The belief that inspired its founding in 1965 could not be truer today, namely that low-income seniors have extraordinary gifts to share with vulnerable children in a wide variety of settings. The Foster Grandparent Program was developed by Sargent Shriver as part of Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty.”
Cindy Beard, Foster Grandparent director and Juli Schultz, program coordinator, presented the following awards:
• Pearl Hollow Horn, nine years of service.
• Loveleah in the Woods, eight years of service.
• Eldora Black Eagle and Margie Hawk, four years of service.
• Aurelia Cisneros, four years of service and a Lifetime Presidential Service Award for 4,417 hours of service.
•Virginia Walking Bull, four years of service and a Lifetime Presidential Service Award for 4,440 hours of service.
• Candy Jewett, three years of service.
• Gloria Belmonte, two years of service and a Gold Presidential Service Award for 1,079 hours of service.
• Edie Knight and Elaine Widow, two years of service.
• Valerie Swan, one year of service and a Gold Presidential Service Award for 1,849 hours of service.
• Brenda Two Shields , 0-1 year of service and a Silver Presidential Service Award for 417 hours of service.
• Marilyn Runs After, 0-1 year of service and a Bronze Presidential Service Award for 169 hours of service.
All volunteers were presented with a certificate for their years of service. We also played bingo with all grandparents in attendance winning a variety of Foster Grandparent program clothing items.
