Harrison to run for S.D. House of Representatives

Michele Harrison, a Mobridge Republican, has announced her candidacy for the House of Representatives from the 23rd Legislative District, a seat currently held by Republican Representative Charlie Hoffman, who is not seeking re-election.

A native of South Dakota, Harrison was born in Mobridge and was raised just south of town on the family’s farming and ranching operation. After graduating from Mobridge High School in 1981, she attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for two years and finished her degree at Arizona State University. In addition to her background in agriculture, Harrison has worked in the mortgage industry and has owned several businesses, which she said have all given her considerable insight into the challenges that face agriculture, small business and homeowners.

Since returning to her hometown years ago, Harrison has been active in her community where she currently serves as the president of the Mobridge Rodeo Association and is the executive director of the Mobridge Economic Development Corporation. She has served as the executive director of the Mobridge in many other local organizations. Harrison is an avid outdoorsman and summer weekends are often spent on a boat on Lake Oahe. Deer and pheasant hunting seasons are spent looking for the main ingredient for a new wild game recipe.

“Agriculture is in my blood and I have a pretty good understanding of what small business deals with day-in and day-out,” Harrison said.

Harrison said she is running not just because she has a real interest and believes she can do a good job in representing this district, but because she wants to give something back to the people who live here.

“This is God’s country, and I feel privileged to be part of it because of the kind of people who live here. They’ve been awfully good to me. I owe them,” Harrison said. “I will listen to them and I would do my best to represent their wishes.”

A fiscal conservative, Harrison said South Dakota needs sound business management, not more taxes.

“School districts are having a tough time, and we need to address those needs, but the answer isn’t more government it’s better government and more common sense,” she said.
