Herreid/Selby Area shuts out Colman-Egan

With a chance to even the score with the team that beat them in the championship last year, the Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines dominated Colman-Egan 30-0 in the Class 9B quarterfinals in Selby on Thursday.
The Wolverines were methodical on offense, running for 281 yards and throwing for 65, while scoring one touchdown in each quarter.
Tray Hettick put the Wolverines on the board with a one-yard run in the first quarter. Brenden Begeman ripped off a 71-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and then scored from 32 yards out in the third quarter. Trey Sayler put the final points on the board with a 33-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Begeman led the Wolverines with 222 yards on 19 carries. Sayler added 44 yards rushing.
The Wolverine defense smothered the Hawks all night. The only success Colman-Egan had was Ryan Voelker running for 91 yards on 23 carries.
“We played our best game of the year defensively,” said coach Clayton Randall. “We were locked in and physical from the start.”
Four players racked up double-digit tackles. Trevor Sayler had a game-high 16 tackles, followed by Trey Sayler with 14, Carter Tisdall with 14 and Chance Gregg. The defense also forced two turnovers with Tisdall recovering a fumble and Begeman picking off an interception.
The second-ranked, 9-1 Wolverines advance to the Class 9B semifinals on Friday when they host Wolsey-Wessington in a one vs. two match-up in Herreid at 6 p.m.
The 8-1 Warbirds have been the No. 1 ranked team in Class 9B since the season began. Their only loss of the season was to undefeated Platte-Geddes, playing in the 9AA semifinals, in a 34-24 game. After beating Langford Area 44-0 in the first round, Wolsey-Wessington beat Corsica-Stickney 50-0 in the quarterfinals.
“We will have to be out best to advance,” said Randall. “Our guys understand the challenge and are going to fight for it.”
