JAY DAVIS: Lady Tigers have never won CSDC

I could not remember the last time the Lady Tigers won the Central South Dakota Conference Tournament. So going back through the girls’ volleyball history I found an answer I wasn’t expecting.

The answer is never!

Yes, I’m as shocked as you.

The Lady Tigers are oh-fer-13 at the CSDC. We have had some very good teams over they years; they just couldn’t win this tourney.

It won’t get any easier this weekend as the Potter County Battlers are a perfect 10-0 and Sully Buttes is 13-2 and on a 10-match winning streak.

At least Warner is not playing in the tournament anymore. The best streak the Lady Tigers ever had in the tourney was three straight second-place finishes. They finished runners-up to Warner in 2009, ’10 and ’11. Their only other second-place finish was in 2005 when they lost to Sully Buttes in the championship.

I would have thought the CSDC volleyball tournament would be about the same age as South Dakota volleyball itself, but the Lady Tigers were not scheduled to compete in it until the 2000-01 season. Maybe it was an omen that the tourney was snowed out that year (volleyball was played in the winter until 2002). The girls have been in the tourney every year since the 2001-02 season, when they finished fourth.

The Mobridge-Pollock trophy case has a lot of variety, but there are no CSDC volleyball tournament title trophies. The 2014 trophy would look pretty sweet behind the glass.

The Lady Tigers have had a lot more success at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament. Saturday was the third time they have finished second. That includes taking second to Chamberlain in the inaugural tourney during the 1998-99 season.

The Lady Tigers came back and beat Stanley County for their first conference tourney title. The girls won three straight BDC championships in 2002, ’03 and ’04. They came back again to win their fifth Big Dakota trophy in 2011. Overall, the Lady Tigers have played in the BDC tournament 17 times and have finished in the top three 13 times.
