Karen Walker dies


Funeral services for Karen Ducheneaux Walker, 70, formerly of Mobridge and Cheyenne River Tribal member, were Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Wakpala Community Center.
Burial was at Ascension Episcopal Cemetery, Blackfoot, under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Karen entered the spirit world on May 19, 2014, in Rosholt.
Karen May Ducheneaux Walker was born on April 26, 1944, at home near the Moreau River, Blackfoot, to Joe Sr. and Rebecca Hates Him Ducheneaux. She attended Moreau River Day School, Wakpala School, Cheyenne River Boarding School and Eagle Butte High School.
In 1960 Karen had a daughter, Connie. She then had Spencer, Jamie, Dana and Edna. She married Ted Walker of Mississippi and then had Becky “Rhoda”, Dee Dee (Dendra), Josie and Courtney (C.T.). They made their home in Perkinson, Miss., for the next several years. Karen moved back to Mobridge in 1974, living here until moving back to Mississippi in 1980. Karen enjoyed being a homemaker and mother, but also worked as a seamstress in clothing manufacturing and also attended cosmetology school while there. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Karen moved to Red Lake, Minn., in 2007 to be near her family. After becoming ill in 2008, Karen moved to Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge. She transferred to Rosholt Care Center in December of 2013 where she remained until the time of her passing on May 19, 2014.
Karen is survived by her children, Connie Jackson of Eagle Butte, Wm. Spencer Ducheneaux of Mobridge, Jamie Ducheneaux of Wakpala, Edna Bowman of Biloxi, Miss., Rhoda (Archie) Mitchell of Floridga, Dendra Loper of Ft. Polk, La., Josette (T.J.) Allen of Mississippi and Courtney Antoine Bliner of East Grand Forks, Minn.; two sisters, Irene Hagen of Mobridge and Cynthia (Richard) Fiddler of Ft. Yates, N.D.; two brothers, Steve (Norma) Ducheneaux of Cass Lake, Minn., and Tim (Marlys) Swimmer of Wakpala; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Karen was preceded in death by her daughter, Dana; grandson, Ricky; parents Joe and Rebecca Ducheneaux; brothers, Joe, Owen and Carl; and sisters, Delma Heldman and Angeline Pay Pay.
