Keller earns second state qualification at Pierre meet

By Jay Davis

The Tigers did not make a lot of noise at the American Legion Track Meet in Pierre on Friday, but they did get something accomplished as Mason Keller qualified for state in his second event.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers have been dealing with illness and injury this spring. On Friday that extended to coach Martin Looyenga, who was sick and did not make the trip.
“I was impressed with some of the things I heard, though,” said Looyenga.
Most impressive was Keller ripping off an 11.1 in the 100-meter dash finals. That time gave him third place and a berth in the State A Track and Field Meet. Keller is now qualified in the 100 and 200.
He added a fifth-place finish in the 400 with a season-best time of 52.3 seconds. He just missed scoring team points when he finished seventh in the 200 with a time of 23.3 seconds.
Younger brother Carson scored the only other points for the Tigers, going 133 feet, two inches and placing fifth in the discus.
While no one else placed in the top six in any event, a number of individuals and relays had personal and season bests.
For the Tigers, the 4×100 team of Keller, Parker Blom, Dylan Cerney and Jesse Nobles lowered their time to 46.4 seconds. The 4×200 team of Blom, Cerney, Nobles and Michael Davis cut that relay’s time to 1:37.8.
The Lady Tigers had Grace Wollman and Jestice Talley each run personal bests in the 200. Wollman ran a 27.7, while Talley ran a 29.9. Hayley Borah and Wollman cut time off their 400s, running 1:03.7 and 1:04.4, respectively. Three relay teams set season lows. The 4×200 team of Alexa Schaefbauer, Cass Heumiller, Talley and Wollman ran a 1:55.0. The 4×400 team of Becca Martin, Wollman, Heumiller and Borah ran a 4:29.5. Autumn Schlomer, Schaefbauer, Borah and Martin ran a 4:40.6 in the medley.
“We’re getting faster,” said Looyenga.

Howard Wood
The Kellers and Lauren Henderson are all from the team that will be participating in the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday. Mason Keller will compete in the 100 and 400. Carson Keller will throw the shot put and discus. Henderson will high jump and run the 400.
The rest of the team will compete in the Harold Severson Relays in Lemmon on Saturday.
