Lady Panthers settle for eighth at State B Tournament

By Jay Davis

After a quick start, Timber Lake could not hold on as Wall rallied in the second half before beating the Lady Panthers 61-59 in overtime in the seventh-place game at the State B Basketball Tournament in Huron on Saturday.
“Overall, I am happy with the way we competed at the tournament,” said coach Chris Hettick. “Obviously our goal was to win some games and we gave ourselves a chance on Saturday, but it didn’t go our way.”
After Timber Lake led by as much as 10 points in the first half, Wall rallied to tie the game at 38-38 early in the fourth quarter. Wall’s momentum kept going until the Eagles led 49-45 with two and a half minutes to play.
Kristie Mettler, who spent three days showing the state that she is all-state material, rallied the Lady Panthers by hitting a driving shot then stealing the ball and scoring again two seconds later. Mettler’s four-point run tied the game at 49-49 with 2:08 to play.
Mettler was not around to provide help in the end as she picked up her fifth foul with 51.1 seconds remaining.
The end looked nigh when Wall’s Carlee Johnston hit two free throws with 9.8 seconds left to give the Eagles a 54-51 lead.
Along came Callie Lawrence, who took the ball and launched a game-tying, 22-foot, three-pointer as time expired.
Timber Lake took an early overtime lead when Makense Nehl scored the extra session’s first basket. Wall took over and scored the next five points to forge a 59-56 lead before Courtney Dahlgren hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to tie things up with 40 seconds to go.
The game looked like it would go a second overtime until Wall’s Autumn Schultz broke free and hit the game-winning shot with four seconds left on the clock.
Mettler led the Lady Panthers with a game-high 23 points. Nehl scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Dahlgren finished with 12, while Lawrence added eight.
Johnston and Schultz shared scoring honors for Wall with 17 points each. Josie Blasius came off the bench to hit six of seven shots and score 15 points. Schultz pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Sanborn Central-Woonsocket
The Lady Panthers were forced to look up at a stream of taller players for the second straight day as they were beaten 73-45 by Sanborn Central-Woonsocket on Friday.
The Blackhawks featured five players 5’10” or taller, including 6’2” Shelby Selland, 6’1” Myah Selland and 6’0” Marissa Weber. The height difference presented matchups the Lady Panthers could not answer, especially when Weber starting shooting outside and hitting threes like a point guard.
The Blackhawks jumped out 23-11 in first quarter and never slowed, building their lead to 22 at the half and 30 after three quarters.
Weber hit five three-pointers and scored 17 points. Shelby Selland scored inside for a team-high 18 points. With the decided height advantage, the Blackhawks shot 67 percent from the field.
Mettler was the only Lady Panther to reach double figures. She put up 17 points while adding six steals and four rebounds. Nehl grabbed a team-high five rebounds and scored three points. Jordan Bickel added five points and four boards.

Warner
The opening round matchup against eventual state champion Warner was a total contrast in height. With the Lady Panthers having no starter taller than the 5’7” Bickel, Warner had no starter listed under 5’10” and was led by 6’2” Miranda Ristau, 6’2” Rachel Rogers, 6’1” Carly Rozell and 6’1” Ashley Rozell.
The Monarchs used the height advantage to pound the ball inside for layup after layup and beat the Lady Panthers 63-43. Warner took a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and never let the Lady Panthers get within single digits the rest of the contest.
Ristau was unstoppable inside. She hit 11 of 13 shots, while scoring a game-high 27 points. She also grabbed a game-leading nine rebounds. Rogers scored 16 points and Ashley Rozell scored 15.
Mettler started a big three days with 17 points and four steals. Dahlgren added 13 points, four assists and three steals.
“We really couldn’t have had worse matchups the first two days,” said Hettick. “We played Warner, which was the biggest team in the state, and followed that with Sanborn Central-Woonsocket, the second biggest team in the tournament. We just aren’t built to handle that kind of size.”

All-Tournament
Mettler’s three-day performance led the voters to make her a member of the All-Tournament Team. In three days, Mettler scored 57 points and picked off 12 steals. The 5’2” senior even managed to block two shots.
Mettler is joined on the All-Tournament team by Miranda Ristau, Rachel Rogers and Ashley Rozell of state champion Warner; Amanda Poppen and Rylie Osthus of De Smet; Kynedi Cheeseman of Hanson; Karlea Stahl of Sully Buttes; Shelby Selland and Rachel Selland of South Central-Woonsocket; Tessa Weeldreyer of Parker; and Autumn Schultz of Wall.
“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of girls,” said Hettick. “I hope when the last three weeks finally settles in, they realize what they accomplished.”
