Lady Tigers crank up defensive second half

By Jay Davis

The Lady Tigers earned their first winning streak since 2012 by beating Lemmon 52-41 at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gym on Saturday.
“We beat a good team,” said coach Lindsey Kramer. “We needed a win of that caliber.”
A big second-half turned the trick for the Lady Tigers. After falling behind 24-19 after two quarters, the Lady Tigers outscored the Cowgirls 33-17 in the second half.
“As coaches, Roger (Hoffman) and I saw a lot of things we really like,” said Kramer. “At halftime we got on the girls about moving their feet on defense and to quit reaching and not allowing them to win the game on free throws.”
After Lemmon shot 13 free throws in the first half, they made just one trip to the line and shot two free throws in the second half.
The girls did not just quit fouling; they cranked up the defense. Lemmon committed 12 turnovers in the second half, many of which led to the Lady Tigers scoring on breakaway baskets.
“Twenty of their 23 turnovers were us stealing the ball,” said Kramer, “allowing us to score 18 points off of those steals.”
The pressure started taking its toll on the Cowgirls late in the third quarter. Mobridge-Pollock finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 34-29 lead. They started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 40-31 lead. Lemmon would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Kramer gave her team all the credit for adapting to a change made just the day before the game.
“I changed our 1-2-2 defense on Wednesday,” said Kramer. “After we practiced it for two days, we decided to give a 2-2-1 press a try on Friday in practice. They executed it very well on Saturday.”
Alexa Schaefbauer led the Lady Tigers offense. She scored a game-high 21 points, including scoring 15 points in the second half and eight in the fourth quarter. Chelsy Hoffman scored 13 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Aundrea Kramer scored 11 points. Hoffman and Kramer combined to hit seven of nine free throws. Kaitlin Johnson-Good Shield led a strong rebounding effort with 10 caroms. Kramer and Naomi Stroeder added seven rebounds each. The Lady Tigers outrebounded the Cowgirls 15-9 in the second half.
“The girls are listening to what we are saying to them,” said Kramer. “If we play defense like that the rest of the year we are going to be just fine.”
Katie Sackmann led Lemmon with 18 points. Kodee Bolte scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Sully Buttes
The Lady Tigers could not keep up with Class B’s fourth-ranked team on Tuesday in Onida. Sully Buttes ran past the Lady Tigers for a 66-37 win.
“Sully Buttes is a good team,” said Kramer. “I don’t want to take any credit away from their program at all, but that shouldn’t have been a 30-point game. We are better than that.”
The Chargers came out quick and opened an 11-0 lead. The Lady Tigers rallied back with Aundrea Kramer wrapping two hoops around a Chelsy Hoffman three-pointer to close the gap to 11-7, only to have Racquel Wientjes of Sully Buttes drain a three at the buzzer to give the home team a 14-7 lead after one quarter.
Wientjes hit three more shots during a 10-0 run in the second quarter as Sully Buttes raised its lead to 32-17.
Things came apart for the Lady Tigers in the third quarter. They turned the ball over nine times, allowing the Chargers to open the second half with a 10-2 run, essentially putting the game away at 42-19.
“We played scared,” said Kramer. “We weren’t aggressive on offense and not physical with them. The infamous turnovers haunted us. Twenty-nine is way too many and we can’t allow that, ever.”
Kramer led the Lady Tigers with nine points and eight rebounds. Stroeder chipped in with another nine points.
Wientjes led the Chargers with 24 points, including 16 in the first half. Chloe Lamb scored 10 of her 21 points in the third quarter.

Miller
The Lady Tigers hit the road on Thursday to challenge 1-3 Miller.
The Rustlers beat the Lady Tigers 42-40 in the rivalry’s first game back in 1977 and have owned the Lady Tigers ever since. After last season’s 48-28 win in Mobridge, Miller has beaten Mobridge-Pollock four straight times and built a 26-16 edge in the all-time series.
On Tuesday, the Lady Tigers will try to beat Standing Rock for the fourth straight time. Mobridge-Pollock’s lone win last season was a 50-44 victory over the Warriors. The Lady Tigers and Warriors first played in 1986 when Standing Rock won a 71-63 game. With three straight wins, the Lady Tigers hold a 15-10 lead in the all-time series.
