Lady Tigers pass road test, beat Groton Area 3-1

After winning six straight at home, the Lady Tigers went on the road to keep their win streak intact. Mobridge-Pollock defeated Groton Area 3-1 in Groton on Tuesday.
“A great all-around team effort led us to the win,” said coach Rose Henderson. “We played well in a tough environment. Groton is probably one of the better teams we have played thus far.”
In winning their ninth straight contest, the Lady Tigers handed Groton Area its first loss of the early season. Mobridge-Pollock fought into extra points to win set one 28-26. Groton Area won set two 25-20 before the Lady Tigers took over with a 25-13 win in set three and a 25-23 win in set four. Groton Area suffered its first defeat, falling to 3-1 on the season.
The middle hitters had a big night for the Lady Tigers. Lauren Henderson had 13 kills of 23 of 25 hitting, while Grace Wollman was 17 of 17 with nine kills. The girls were big at net defense with four blocks each.
“Lauren and Grace hit the ball hard and accurately,” said Henderson. “Good serve receiving allowed us to utilize our middles.”
Cassi Heumiller was perfect setting with 34 assists. Sam Good Shield and Grace Jensen led an 11-ace serving attack with five and three aces, respectively. Henderson did not just play defense at the net, leading the back row defense with 16 digs. Good Shield had 15 digs and Alexa Schaefbauer had 13.
Audrey Wanner led Groton Area with 12 kills on offense and 12 digs on defense. Josie Doeden had 11 kills and two blocks. Madee Jones dished 31 assists.

Leola-Frederick
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a big lead before having to stave off Leola-Frederick for a 3-2 win at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gym on Thursday.
Mobridge-Pollock came out strong and took a 2-0 lead on 25-20 and 25-22 wins. Leola-Frederick fought back to win set three 25-20 and set four 25-22 before the Lady Tigers reassumed control and won the rubber match 15-11.
“We came out really well the first two sets and then we put it in cruise control until the fourth set,” Henderson. “I give Leola-Frederick credit, they are a good team and didn’t give up even though they were down 2-0.”
After letting the Titans come all the way back to square one, the Lady Tigers took over midway through the fifth set. An early 4-0 run gave the Lady Tigers a 7-3 lead. The Titans fought back to one point at 9-8, but the Lady Tigers responded with another 4-0 run and never looked back.
“I am proud of how the girls came back in set four and in set five,” said Henderson. “It was a good win to have going into the weekend.”
Lauren Henderson led the offense with 13 kills, including six straight points in the second set. Alexa Schaefbauer had 12 kills, including the final point of the match. Kylee Wagner served a team-leading four aces and added eight kills. Cassi Heumiller handled most of serving, going 132 of 133 with 31 assists. Sam Good Shield and Grace Jensen had 20 and 17 digs, respectively, while Henderson had three blocks and Grace Wollman two to lead the defense.
MacKenzie Heilman led a balanced Leola-Frederick with 10 kills, while defending the net with 6.5 blocks. April Hoffman had four aces on 26 of 27 serving. Keely Podoll had 10 assists, while Chandler Ellwein defended with 23 digs and four blocks.

Busy busy
The Lady Tigers have a very busy time the next few days. They host McIntosh on Thursday, compete in the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday and return home to host Ipswich on Monday. Both home matches have 6:30 JV starts.
The Lady Tigers beat McIntosh 2-0 in the home tourney on Saturday for their 13th straight win in the series. Mobridge-Pollock is 33-5-2 all-time against McIntosh.
The Lady Tigers will be looking for their 15th straight win against Ipswich on Monday. The Lady Tigers are 16-4 all-time against Ipswich. Ipswich has not won a match since 2002.
The Lady Tigers finished second in the BDC tournament last year. The last time the Lady Tigers won the conference tournament was in 2011.
“This will be a challenging weekend for us,” said Henderson. “You never know what will happen with Winner and Miller.”
