Lady Tigers play best game in Miller loss

By Jay Davis

The Lady Tigers put up their strongest fight of the season in Miller on Friday, staying close to the Rustlers until the fourth quarter before dropping a 48-36 game. The game was not as close at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Saturday when Groton Area dealt the girls a 57-20 defeat.
“We still need to handle the ball better,” said coach Ann LaMont. “But the girls are starting to understand the offensive scheme. One of the things we need to start doing is executing on offense and make something happen when we have possession of the ball.”

Miller
After falling behind 12-2 in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers staged a comeback against Miller. Cassi Heumiller got things started with eight straight points. Including her first-quarter basket, Heumiller scored the Lady Tigers’ first 10 points of the game. Down 18-10 late in the quarter, Kaitlin Good Shield and Alexa Schaefbauer finished the run with back-to-back three-pointers to draw the Lady Tigers to within two points at the intermission.
The girls kept the game close in the third quarter and tied the score at 23-23 after Chelsy Hoffman hit a basket and then one of two free throws.
But then the turnover bug hit. The Lady Tigers had two straight turnovers late in the quarter and trailed 29-25 at the quarter break. They started the fourth quarter with three straight miscues and suddenly trailed 35-25 before Hoffman settled things down with a driving basket.
Although the Lady Tigers did not make another run at getting back in the game, they finished with their most points of the season and their least points allowed.
“The scoreboard doesn’t show it, but it was a huge victory,” said LaMont.
The three Lady Tiger freshmen combined for 29 points. Good Shield scored 11, Heumiller 10 and Schaefbauer eight. Hoffman added six points. Kylee Wagner and Aundrea Kramer combined for 13 rebounds.
Jamie Mentzer led the Rustlers with 31 points. She scored 15 straight points for Miller when the score went from 23-23 to 38-27. Kristen Peterka scored seven and Jansen Hunter scored five.

Groton Area
The Lady Tigers looked like they might give visiting Groton Area a run for its money during the opening minutes at home on Friday. But then Groton coach Shaun Wanner went to a bigger lineup and the visitors took over the boards and went on a run. The Tigers trailed just 8-4 before Groton went on a 19-3 run and took control of the ballgame.
“When we are outsized, that’s when we get down,” said LaMont. “We’ve talked about learning to push back and fight for the ball.”
The odd numbered quarters were okay for the Lady Tigers as they scored seven points in the first and third quarters. The even numbered quarters were unproductive with three points in each quarter.
Hoffman led the team with six points. Good Shield and Maranda Wagner scored five points each. Heumiller had six rebounds and Kramer had four.
Courtney Kurtz led Groton Area with 15 points and Camille Sippel scored 12. Coming off the bench to help alter the game were Tori Bjerke with 10 points and five rebounds and Carly Wheeting with four points and five boards.
