Lady Tigers take fourth at Big Dakota tourney

Mobridge-Pollock won three out of four matches and took fourth place at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers drew McLaughlin and Winner in pool play and came out 1-1, defeating McLaughlin 25-11, 25-8 and dropping a 25-21,25-14 match to Winner.
“Starting with McLaughlin we were able to wake up and get some of the bus ride off of our legs,” said coach Rose Henderson. “We did well in the first set against Winner. I’m happy with how we played, but in the second set we gave up an 11-point run. Too many runs has been a part of our problem.”
In tournament play, the Lady Tigers drew Chamberlain and Todd County for round-robin play to determine fourth, fifth and sixth.
Against Chamberlain, the Lady Tigers avenged a season-opening loss with a 2-1 win. Chamberlain won set one 25-20 before the Lady Tigers turned the match around and won two straight 25-14 sets.
“We gave up a couple more big runs in the first set,” said Henderson, “but stopped them after that. We established our middles and played well.”
The Todd County match was tight for two sets with the Lady Tigers winning 25-23 and the Lady Falcons winning 26-24 before Mobridge-Pollock pulled away for a 25-17 win in the deciding set.
“Todd County kind of hung around with us until the third set when we got our attitude back,” said Henderson.
Henderson added that going 3-1 and beating Chamberlain should be a big confidence boost for the Lady Tigers, and another step in growing into a better team.
As for the rest of the tourney, Miller won the championship with Winner taking second and Stanley County taking third. In the bottom bracket Crow Creek finished seventh, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte eighth and McLaughlin ninth.
Following the tournament, Alex Steiger and Hannah Gushwa were named to the all-tournament team, along with Kadye Fernholz, VonnaGail Schlechter and Kassie Schaefers of Miller, Alexis Richey, Morgan Hammerbeck and Abby Marts of Winner, Teri Drageset and Ally McQuistion of Stanley County, Makenzie Sorenson of Chamberlain, Raven Cournoyer of Todd County, Reese Ganje of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte, Tomi Levering of McLaughlin and Kaylee Wells of Crow Creek.
