Lady Tigers takes second after starting day as eighth seed

After entering the day as the eighth seed, the Lady Tigers played their best volleyball of the early season and took second place at the Mobridge-Pollock Invitational tournament on Saturday.
“This weekend the girls got off to a great start,” said coach Rose Henderson. “They passed the ball well so we could run a balanced offense. They also cut down on the errors at the net and service line.”
After defeating Timber Lake in the opening round and McIntosh in the semifinals, the Lady Tigers ran into once-beaten Faulkton Area. The match was tight nearly all the way to the end. Faulkton Area won set one 25-18. The Lady Tigers fought back for a 26-24 win in set two before the Trojans eked out a 25-23 win for the title.
“Faulkton is a good team,” said Henderson. “I’m happy with how we played against them.”
The upset over top seed Timber Lake started with an epic battle that had the two old rivals scoring back and forth until the Lady Tigers surged in overtime for a 29-27 win. That gave them the momentum and they controlled set two for a 25-19 win. That momentum carried over to the semifinals where the Lady Tigers ran away from McIntosh 25-11, 25-14.
“The girls played smart volleyball, which allowed us to handle Timber Lake and McIntosh,” said Henderson.
The Trojans, who started the day as the number three seed, defeated Eureka/Bowdle 24-14, 25-16 and then upended two seed Faith 25-23, 20-25, 28-26, to get to the championship match.
Faith bounced back to beat McIntosh 25-15, 25-11 in the third-place match.
Timber Lake rebounded from its opening round loss to beat Cheyenne-Eagle Butte and sweep Eureka/Bowdle 25-12, 25-20 for the consolation title.
Edmunds Central beat Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 25-18, 25-15 for the seventh place. The win was the first ever for the Raiders at the Mobridge Tournament.
After leading the Lady Tigers to their surprising second place finish, Jestice Talley and Molly Lahren were named to the all-tournament team. The two Lady Tigers were joined by Grace Schlechter, Peyton Melius and Taylor Cramer of Faulkton Area, Loryn Schoelerman of Timber Lake, Mikenzy Miller and Jayden Shoemaker of Faith, Lauren Baumberger of McIntosh and Hunter Ellis of Eureka/Bowdle.
