Lions beat Lady Tigers for 10th straight time

In what started as a promising night, the Lady Tigers could not keep momentum on their side as they fell 3-1 to Linton-HMB at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gym on Tuesday.
The Lady Tigers came out on fire and took a quick 5-0 lead. The lead grew as big as 20-5 before Mobridge-Pollock settled for a 25-10 win in the first set. Things changed midway through the second set. The Lady Tigers led 16-14 when the Lions reeled off seven straight points to take a 21-16 lead. The Lady Tigers never got closer than 23-20 before falling 25-20. It was all Linton-HMB after that as the visitors won set three 25-19 and set four 25-18.
The Lions now have a 10-match winning streak against the Lady Tigers.
“We started strong and then got flat,” said coach Rose Henderson. “They were more aggressive than us.”
The loss was the third straight for the Lady Tigers. They were beaten 3-0 by Sully Buttes in Onida on Thursday and 3-0 by Potter County in Gettysburg on Monday.
“We’re in a little slump,” said Henderson. “It’s not coming at the best time. We need a little more attitude. We need to increase our mental toughness. We have our fundamentals down, we just need to execute better.”
Alexa Schaefbauer led the Lady Tigers with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 10 digs. Grace Wollman and Lauren Henderson had eight kills each. Cassi Heumiller dished 29 assists and served a match-leading four aces.
Sierra Kelsch led the Lions with 10 kills. Rachel Umber had nine and Jenna Bernhardt had six. Katie Nieuwsma handed out 29 assists. Megan Martell had a match-high 11 digs. Karlee Kalberer led serving with three aces.

Potter County
The Lady Tigers were defeated 25-17, 25-19, 25-23 by the Battlers in Gettysburg on Monday.
Kylee Wagner led the offense with six kills. Grace Wollman and Grace Jensen backed her up with four kills each. Alexa Schaefbauer led serving with four aces. Sam Good Shield led the defense with nine digs. Cassi Heumiller sent out 18 assists.
Alyssa Haberer led the Battlers with 14 kills and three blocks. Sierra Wieseler and Kori Hansen had double-figure digs with 18 and 11, respectively. Megan Schrempp set for 24 assists.

Sully Buttes
Class B’s fourth-ranked Sully Buttes Chargers, and namely Racquel Wientjes, put on a hitting display in beating the Lady Tigers 25-17, 25-18, 25-14 in Onida on Thursday.
Wientjes had 24 kills on 36 of 37 hitting. The Lady Tigers had just 22 kills as a team.
“Racquel hit out of her mind,” said Henderson, adding that the Lady Tigers, “didn’t execute the game plan.”
Wientjes was not alone. Chloe Lamb added 10 kills on 23 of 25 hitting. Veronica Kinkler set the hitters up with 44 assists and added four aces. Lamb was one of three Chargers with double-digit digs.
Alexa Schaefbauer led the Lady Tiger offense with eight kills on 17 of 18 hitting. Grace Wollman added six kills. Lauren Henderson and Sam Good Shield had 12 digs each. Cassi Heumiller had 22 assists.

Warner
Things do not get any easier for the slumping Lady Tigers. They finish the regular season on Friday when they travel to Warner to take on the number one in Class B, three time defending state champion Warner Monarchs.
The Monarchs beat Webster Area 3-0 on Tuesday to run their season record to 24-5.
The Lady Tigers and Monarchs do have a short history. They have played six times with each team gaining three wins. The Lady Tigers beat Warner three times from 2002 to 2004. The Monarchs have won the last three, the latest being during the 2011 season.
