Long canoe trip being used to raise cancer awareness

By Jay Davis

The high winds late last week kept a couple of canoeists from working their way down the river raising cancer awareness along the way.
Gary Nordloh, 34, of Glasgow, Mont., and Brandon North, 21, of Lovelock, Nev., have been traversing the Missouri River for three months. They left Three Forks, Mont., on May 15 with a goal of reaching St. Louis, Mo., on Sept. 15.
“We’re making the trip to raise awareness for breast cancer and children’s cancers,” said Nordloh.
The canoeists said that they, along with trusty dog Roscoe, have had pretty good luck on their trip so far.
“Montana took quite a while,” said North, “but we flew right through North Dakota. We’ll see how long it takes to get through South Dakota. There are a lot of dams to portage around.”
Every corner they take is new to the men. Neither has been to this part of the country before.
“Lake Oahe is huge,” said Nordloh. “We’re not able to make as many miles per day on such big water.”
The winds died down (although rain followed) and the men were able to shove off and start heading south on Friday. With good luck and good weather, they will reach their destination by their goal date, and they will have had the chance to spread the word about their cause along the way.
