Mavis Hilscher dedicated her life to being a nurse

Mavis Leone Hilscher, 82, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017, in Rapid City with her children by her side.
Mavis was born on June 9, 1935, in Mobridge to Emanuel and Clara Allerdings. Early childhood was lived with three brothers and three sisters in Mobridge, Akaska and rural Mobridge. She graduated from Mobridge High School in 1953.
Determined that God’s call for her life was to be a nurse, she enrolled at St. John’s School of Nursing in Huron where she graduated in 1956. She attended Northwest Bible College in Minot, N.D., graduating in 1959. Mavis helped at the Church of God in Bismarck, N.D., until June of 1966 when she returned to South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating in January of 1969 with her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing.
She married Paul Hilscher on Aug. 2, 1969, and is mother to Amy Irene and Paul Emanuel. The family lived in Bismarck, Minot, Wishek, N.D., Freemont, Neb., Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Broomfield, Colo., and Westminster, Colo., before moving to Rapid City in 2001 to be closer to family.
Mavis enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was a staunch supporter of Christian mission work.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Irene Hilscher, and her son, Paul Emanuel (Carol) Hilscher, all of Rapid City; two brothers, Ralph (Claudette) Allerdings of Moonachie, N.J., and Wesley (Marilyn) Allerdings of Glendive, Mont.; two sisters, Phyllis Thurman of Longview, Wash., and Beverly Hammer of Mobridge; and two grandchildren, Diane Lalonde and Isaac Harwood, both of Rapid City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Dale; sister, Janice; three nephews; and brother-in-law, Cliffurd Thurman.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City with Pastor Julie Norwood officiating.
Interment was Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at Greenwood Cemetery in Mobridge with Pastor Paul Hathaway officiating.
