McLaughlin cowboy wins bull riding at home rodeo

Numerous local competitors gave it their all at the Major James McLaughlin rodeo on July 13 and 14 in McLaughlin.
McLaughlin’s very own Chance Schott scored 74 points in the bull riding. Schott earned $506.34 for his ride on Sunday night in front of his home crowd.
Krystal Dorsey ran in the barrel racing on Saturday night, clocking in at a swift 17.77. The Isabel cowgirl’s time held up through Sunday night’s rodeo, earning her first place and $702.77.
Sydney Maher of Timber Lake and Summer Kosel also made the top 10. Maher ran a time of 18.07 for seventh place and Kosel, who won Fort Pierre’s Fourth of July Rodeo barrel racing, was in a three-way tie for eighth with a time of 18.08. Vanessa Volk of Linton, N.D., and Kristen Zancanella of Aurora tied with Kosel.
Another Timber Lake cowgirl earned herself some money in McLaughlin on Sunday. Shanna Gebhardt landed sixth place in the ladies breakaway roping, earning $81.48 with a time of 3.40 seconds.
Chad Hetzel of Lemmon placed third in the senior mens breakaway roping on Sunday. Hetzel had a time of 2.4 seconds, earning himself $359.39.
JJ Hunt of Ridgeview took fifth place in the steer wrestling. Hunt made a time of 5.2 seconds for a payout of $89.73. Hunt also placed third in the team roping with Colt Peterson of Isabel on Sunday. The team caught their steer in 5.9 seconds to earn $258.02 each.
Nate Horner of Dawson, N.D., teamed up with Jesse Dale of Trail City for the team roping. The team placed fourth with a 6.2 second run to earn $92.15 each.
The Lemmon Boss Cowman rodeo was also this weekend from July 12-14. One area competitor placed at the rodeo.
John Hoven of McLaughlin, who also competed at the McLaughlin rodeo last weekend, roped in the senior mens breakaway. He tied with Chuck Hamlin of Highmore for second place with a time of 3.2 seconds. Hoven didn’t win any prize money at home, but he took home $483.84 for his time in Lemmon.
