New charge delays Thompson trial

By Katie Zerr –

An additional charge against a former Mobridge pastor has led to one charge being dropped, another charge filed against him and a new trial.
Timothy Thompson, 40, was facing one count of sexual contact with a child under the age of 16 connected with an incident that allegedly occurred in Mobridge while Thompson was the pastor of a local church. According to Walworth County State’s Attorney Jamie Hare, while preparing for Thompson’s trial that was scheduled for last week, more evidence of another alleged incident of sexual contact with a child was reported.
Hare said one charge of sexual contact with a child under that age of 16 was dismissed in order to include the second charge against Thompson in the trial.
Hare said Thompson has made his initial appearance on the new charge, but a new trial date has not yet been set.
The charges allege that Thompson had sexual contact with a child in November of 2008 in Mobridge. He served as pastor for the Cornerstone Community Church until 2013. Thompson had also served as principal at McLaughlin Middle School and High School.
