No medals won by Lady Tigers or Tigers at State A track meet

By Jay Davis

No one had that special race or event this time around. The Tigers and Lady Tigers ended their season without scoring points at the State A Track and Field Meet in Spearfish and Rapid City on Friday and Saturday.
The closest the team came to the medals stand was three 10th-place finishes. Mason Keller ran to 10th in the 200-meter with a time of 23.44 seconds. He, along with Parker Blom, Dylan Cerney and Jesse Nobles ran the 4×100 in 46.13 seconds for 10th. Lauren Henderson cleared the high jump bar at 4 feet, 9 inches, but nine jumpers finished ahead of her.
The teams ran to where they were seeded entering the meet, for the most part. The three 10th-place finishes were all improvements over the seeding. Keller was seeded 19th in the 200 and Henderson was seeded 16th in the high jump. The relay team moved up just one spot after entering state as the 11 seed.
“You hope for the best, but no one had their best race of the year,” said coach Martin Looyenga, “and that’s what it would have taken.”
He added that the conditions were not at all right for his athletes to have career days. Friday in Spearfish was cold and rainy. In fact, the start of the meet had to be delayed an hour for the rain to could quit falling.
Weather aside, Looyenga was hoping to see his charges pull off their best times of year.
“If you’re going to compete against the best in state, you have to have your best race,” said Looyenga.
While the team came home from the Black Hills with no points from state, Looyenga said that his young team with just four seniors had a very good year and there is promise for an exciting season next spring.
