A man being held at the Walworth County Jail awaiting extradition to New Mexico had a short taste of freedom Saturday, Oct. 27, after escaping from an enclosed exercise yard.

According to Walworth County Sheriff Duane Mohr, the 52-year-old man from New Mexico had been arrested in Sioux County, N.D. Inmates from Sioux County are held at the Walworth County Jail.

The man used a bolt from the basketball backboard in the exercise yard to damage the wire mesh of the fence enclosure and escape.

He was seen and detained by an employee of the jail who saw the inmate as he ran from the area and was returned to the jail after a short period of time, according to Mohr.
