Oahe’s fishing guides busier than usual

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the country, the outdoors seems to be enticing some people to do more of or try things they hadn’t considered doing before – such as fishing.
Owners of the MoPro Guide Service and MoRest Motel, Brent and Kelly Kemnitz, said that business lately has been nothing but busy. Brent’s guiding service has had more jobs this year than any other year since the he and Kelly purchased the motel in 2008.
Brent’s MoPro Guide Service has seen a number of people who had planned for a Canadian fishing trip and instead chose Lake Oahe due to borders being shut down. Brent and his four fishing guides have taken out groups of three to four people, six to seven days a week for the month of June and July.
Brent said that in the early summer months, fish were coming in great amounts and looked healthy as ever. But he said that it’s been one of the more challenging years guiding. He believes the bait fish he’s used to seeing near the Mobridge area have slipped down to the lower end of the reservoir.
Near the tributaries, Brent said, there have been just enough fish to catch.
“We’ve been able to catch limits of fish every time we’ve gone out,” Brent said. “It’s just we have to work hard for them.”
Lake Oahe is made up of 370,000 acres and can get as deep as 205 feet. The lake is full of walleye, channel catfish, northern pike, white bass, smallmouth bass and many more can be found throughout the lake.
