Olson and Bauer take third place at Stanley County

By Jay Davis

Isaac Olson and Nathan Bauer placed third to pace the Tigers at the season-opening Stanley County Invitational wrestling tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
“Not bad,” said coach Scott Stone of the team’s first competition of the season. “We won a lot of third periods and in overtime. We’re going to win more in the future.”
Olson opened with a 49-second pin over Kayden Chauncey of Todd County, but was defeated 11-9 by Dylan VanDerBoom of Newell, who went on to win the 138-pound title. Olson rallied to pin teammate Tucker Holzer in 57 seconds before pinning Jacob Zacher of Spearfish in the third-place match.
Bauer was defeated 7-3 by Zailin Irion of Spearfish in the first round at 160 pounds before claiming four straight wins to claim third place. After taking a forfeit win from Todd County, Bauer defeated Alex Martinez of Potter County 5-0, won an injury default over Tate Petrak of Bennett County and fought off Austin Wiley of Sully Buttes 4-1 in the third-place match.
Jaden Madison took fourth place at 145 pounds. Madison won his first two matches, pinning John Trimble of Spearfish and earning a 12-2 major decision over Bleau Hoge of Lemmon-McIntosh. He was pinned by Michael Scott of Stanley County in the semifinals. He beat Jack Miller of Lyman 5-0 to get to the third-place match, but was defeated 12-2 by Lane Schuelke of Newell.
Caden Lenz, Mason Schoenhard and Quinten Fish had fifth-place finishes.
Lenz went 2-2 at 113 pounds. He lost a 10-3 match to Jackson Eklund of Burke/Gregory in his first match before claiming a forfeit win over Spearfish in the second round. After getting pinned by Derick Dower of Spearfish, Lenz won an injury default over Payden Peterson of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree in the fifth-place match.
Schoenhard had six matches while taking fifth at 132 pounds. He went 4-2 including a 3-1 sudden victory win over Tashon Clark of Spearfish in the fifth-place match. Schoenhard pinned Will Crazy Bull of Todd County in 24 seconds to start his day. He was beaten 16-1 by Luke Smith of Potter County in the next round before pinning Khalan Martin of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree and beating Kutter Rogers of Lyman 10-3. Finn Hanson of Burke/Gregory beat Schoenhard 10-5 in his attempt to get to the third-place match.
Fish pinned Matt Fegueroa of Potter County at 1:03 in his first match at 285 pounds, but was pinned in the exact same time by Jeremiah Harmon of Spearfish in the semifinals. Ridge Oliver of Burke/Gregory pinned Fish in the next round, but the Tiger heavyweight rallied to pin Jadeon Biggers of Lyman at 4:40 for fifth place. Harmon went on to win the 285-pound title.
Bray Harrison and Holzer had sixth-place finishes.
Harrison wrestled six times going 3-3 at 152 pounds. His wins came over Wesley Dodd of Spearfish, Kadin Gifford of Spearfish and Tristan Janis of Todd County.
Holzer, wresting as the non-scorer at 138 pounds, went 3-3 with wins over Carl Peterson of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree and Matthew Ackerman of Spearfish. He also won a forfeit over Potter County.
Jacob Steiger took third place at 106 pounds. After dropping matches to Clarene Winter of Bennett County and Jacob Wike of Todd County, Steiger came from behind to score with less than 10 seconds left to beat Noah Ryan of Spearfish 11-10 in the seventh-place match.
Jason Gerry suffered a 1-2 day at 170 pounds, but picked up his first win of the season, pinning Duane Marshall of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree.
“We took seventh place as a team,” said Stone, “against some pretty tough competition.”
Stone said the Tigers will head back to the wrestling room to make improvements after getting their first taste of competition.
“We came out flat sometimes and took some unnecessary risks,” said Stone. “And we have to work on getting guys off our heads.”
On the other side, Stone said his Tigers are getting used tp what he and the staff are trying to teach in his first year.
“The kids have bought into the program a little more,” said Stone. “They are gaining more trust in the coaches. I just want to see them pick up the intensity a little more. They are young and still trying to find their way.”
