Olson earns third place at Linton tournament

Isaac Olson led the Tigers by taking third place at 152 pounds at the Linton Holiday Tournament in Linton, N.D., on Friday and Saturday.
Olson was one of five Tigers earning their way to the medal stand. Jacob Steiger took fourth place at 126 pounds and Tucker Holzer took seventh place at 170 pounds, while Isaac Aman took eighth place at 113 pounds and Tucson Freeman took eighth place at 160 pounds.
“I am not at all disappointed in the way we wrestled,” said coach Nathan Ford. “It was a tough tournament, one of the toughest tournaments we go to. Isaac Olson and Jacob Steiger wrestled really well. Tucson Freeman wrestled really well. Isaac Aman and Tucker Holzer went from not placing last year to placing this year.”
Ford added that not only does the tournament draw many of the top Class B wrestlers North Dakota has to offer, but our neighbors to the north have had two more weeks of wrestling under their belts.
“They’re two weeks ahead of us so I don’t take any of our losses as bad losses,” said Ford.
Olson went 5-1 in earning his second straight third-place finish at the Linton tourney. His only loss came in the semifinals to weight division winner Josh Irwin of New Salem-Almont, who is 19-0 this season. Olson won two pins and a decision leading up to Irwin. After his 9-1 loss, Olson pinned Brady Volk of Rugby before defeating Walter Winkler of Des-Lacs/Burlington/Lewis and Clark 4-2 in the third-place match.
Steiger won by pin and major decision, but then ran into three-time North Dakota state champion Kyle Burwick of Hettinger/Scranton/Bison and was defeated 19-6. He rebounded with a 15-3 win over Brecken Lura of Carrington, but fell 3-1 to Ethan Wonser of Williams County in the third-place match.
Burwick is the 33rd ranked senior wrestler in the country and is headed to the University of Wisconsin.
“Jacob did all he could,” said Ford. “He took him all three periods and made him earn every point.”
Holzer won four times in taking seventh at 170. Three of his wins were pins. He put Dylan Grove of Rugby, Robert Cole of Mondak and Kaulder Kvamme of Carrington to their backs. His losses came against the wrestlers who went on to finished third and fourth. In the seventh-place match, Holzer handed Aaron Ripplinger of Beulah-Hazen a 9-0 major decision.
Aman took eighth at 113 pounds. His two wins were both pins over Quinn Bakken of Napoleon/G-S and Gus Bombach of Killdeer. Aman lost to Parker Geditz of Faulkton Area and Jakob Hudson of Northern Lights before falling to Matthew Wolf of South Border in the seventh-place match. Hudson went on to beat Geditz in the third-place match.
Freeman pinned Angel Guerrero of Williams County and Tyler Selzler of New Salem-Almont before losing to eventual champion Alex Aesoph of Faulkton Area. He then lost two tight matches, 3-2 to Jaden Bosch of Linton-HMB and 4-3 to Jacob Ruggles of Bowman County.
Jon Keller, wrestling at 220, hyperextended an elbow in the tourney. After getting pinned by weight class champion Beau Jeffers of Bowman County, Keller had to injury default his second match.
Ford said they do not know the extent of the injury yet.
“Maybe he’ll wrestle in Webster, maybe it’ll make him sit for a while,” said Ford.
The rest of the team had a rough tournament. Remmington Ford, Favian Sanchez, Andrew Silbernagel, Josh Norder and Kalvin Netterville all had winless tourneys.
“Some of the newer wrestlers got a feel for what the tough tournaments are going to be like,” said Ford.

Webster
The Tigers will compete in the Webster Invitational Wrestling Tourney in Webster on Friday.
Ford said it will be a good tourney but, “There are not as many teams this year.”
The Tigers will be wrestling against host Webster Area, Britton-Hecla, Clark/Willow Lake, Deuel, Hamlin/Castlewood, Lead-Deadwood, Miller/Highmore-Harrold, Sisseton, Tiospa Zina and North Dakota teams Central Cass and Des-Lacs/Burlington/Lewis and Clark.
