OUTSIDE THE FENCE: Irony is the ‘defenders’ are at the heart of crisis

I am a big fan of irony.
To understand this one must understand the definition of the word. According to the dictionary irony is the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
At this time in the United States irony is on the forefront of a crisis that had been nearly shut down but is now once again rapidly on the rise.
The Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is overwhelming healthcare, the funeral industry and the education system. It has slowed down the reopening of businesses that were just on the edge of recovery.
The irony is those who loudly voice their opinions about how the government handled the earlier crisis are now those who are causing the re-emergence.
The so-called defenders of our freedom who have refused to be vaccinated for any number of reasons are those with children being infected at an alarming rate, are 94% of those hospitalized and the reason that since June more than $5 billion was spent caring for the infected.Just when our overworked, overwhelmed and mentally exhausted healthcare workers were starting to recover from the most difficult time in their careers, the influx of infected “defenders” are causing them immeasurable grief again.
We are facing another economic shutdown, another workforce crisis and are racing toward the edge of a healthcare system collapse in some areas of the country. The irony of that last statement is in those areas the “defender” population is the majority.
The ultimate irony in all of this is that those “defenders” proclaim they are carrying the banner for limiting government intervention in our lives.
The ironic twists in this are they are fine with the government interfering with women’s rights to make decisions about their own bodies; with government interfering with people’s rights to vote; and with the government stomping on the personal liberties of freedom of speech and the right to gather and peacefully protest.
The biggest irony of all is that what is labeled as defending freedom is actually a total disregard of the greater good for our nation.
That is the saddest of all.
