Reese Cerney, Kregen Norder named first team All-State

After a season in which Mobridge-Pollock was one of the best teams in the state, four Tigers have earned spots on the Class 11B All-State Football Team. Seniors Reese Cerney and Kregen Norder were named first team, while senior Caden Halsey and junior Trace Cerney were named honorable mention.
Reese Cerney was named to the first team at wide receiver where he has put up the biggest receiving numbers in Tiger football history.
“Reese is the best wide receiver that I have coached in the past 13 years,” said coach Paul Goehring. “He is a great route runner, extremely quick coming out of his breaks, and has excellent hands. He’s very smart and has an understanding of what the offense is going to do.”
This season, Reese had 31 catches for 755 yards and 13 touchdowns. Getting carries for the first time, he ran the ball 21 times for 280 yards and four more touchdowns.
“He was targeted 34 times and 31 of them for a catch rate of 91 percent,” said Goehring. “He is a very explosive player who averaged 24 yards per catch and 13 yards per run.”
Goehring said, “Reese made big-time plays in big-time situations.”
That was evidenced this year when the Tigers trailed Sisseton on the road 20-12 in the fourth quarter. Reese responded with a touchdown catch to tie the game, an interception to get up the game-winning drive and the game-winning touchdown catch with 15 seconds left.
With career numbers of 84 catches for 1,869 yards, 29 touchdowns and five two-point conversions, it’s little wonder he was named to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader’s Elite 45 Football Team, which encompasses the best players from every class from 11AAA to 9B. Reese was also named to the Academic All-State Football Team as a 4.0 student, was named first team All-NEC and was a team captain.
He was also an accomplished defensive back with 79 tackles, 11 interceptions, two touchdowns and 13 pass breakups in his career.
“As a defensive back, Reese had an amazing reaction to the ball and had very fast closing speed, which made it hard for opposing teams to throw deep,” said Goehring.
It was one Tiger for the offense and one for the defense as Kregen Norder was named first team defensive end.
The 6’3, 190-pounder made the field smaller on his side all season with 58 tackles, two quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
“Kregen was a very physical defensive end, making it hard for the opposing team to run to his side,” said Goehring. “He did an excellent job of holding his ground and getting off blocks, which enabled him to take away the outside as well as the off-tackle plays. He was a great leader on and off the field. He practiced with intensity and was an impact player in game situations.
Kregen was just as valuable to the Tigers when they were on offense.
“He was our best lineman on both sides of the ball the last two years,” said Goehring. “As an offensive tackle, he was a key part of the success of our outside run game and quarterback counter. He did an excellent job where he was pulling or reach blocking, handling most defensive ends without a double team.”
Also an Academic All-State Team member and first team All-NEC player, Kregen will continue his football career next fall at South Dakota School of Mines.
Kregen’s intensity was a big part of his leadership, which did not just come on Friday nights.
“He played very physical in practice, which carried over to game situations,” said Goehring. “Some of his contact in practice made our skill position players happy Kregen was on our team. He would get upset in practice when we would do Gauntlet or Oklahoma drills. I sometimes keep away from these physical drills to keep players fresh.”
Caden Halsey earns honorable mention after having the most prolific quarterback career in Tiger football history. After a season in which he completed 89 of 134 passes for 1,519 yards and 21 touchdowns, Caden has career numbers of 243 for 440 passes for 4,176 yards and 53 touchdowns.
“Caden stepped in as quarterback during the middle of his freshman year and has put up amazing career stats,” said Goehring. “He set the school record for career passing yards and touchdowns. He was a very accurate passer, completing 66 percent of his passes this season.”
From early on in his career, it was evident Caden could launch a long bomb.
“Caden is known to throw an excellent deep ball as he can throw over 50 yards in the air,” said Goehring. “He is a naturally talented athlete. He is very patient and calm mentally, which is critical at his position.
After not being a runner threat through most of his first two years, Caden added that to his arsenal late last year and turned it up a notch this year with 410 yards rushing and five touchdowns.
“He really stepped up in the middle of his junior year as a run threat,” said Goehring. “He was a great run threat on our jet sweep. That put a lot more stress on opposing defenses.”
An All-NEC player and a team captain, Halsey was also a talented punter. He averaged 30.9 yards per punt on 15 kicks this year with three punts inside the 20, including two punts that were downed inside the five-yard line.
“We will miss his punting abilities,” said Goehring.
Trace Cerney earned honorable mention at middle linebacker, where he was the Tigers’ leading tackler. Trace racked up 81 tackles this year, including 1.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. He has been voted Defensive MVP by his teammates each of the last two seasons.
“Trace was the heart of our defense,” said Goehring. “He has been a key component in the overall success of the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers during the last two seasons. He has played the position of linebacker with all-state caliber ability and statistics. His vision, reaction time and natural nose-for-the-ball abilities make him worthy for an all-state nod. He is the type of player who can play everywhere on the field, but middle linebacker is his fit because he can cover both sides of the field.”
With a season to go, Trace has career numbers of 151 tackles, including 19 for loss, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions.
After switching from guard to fullback/H-back, Cerney became a big part of the Tiger offense, running for 101 yards and two touchdowns and receiving with 10 catches for 163 yards and three touchdowns, but it was his love of blocking that opened things up for the Tiger offense.
“As a fullback, he did an excellent job lead blocking and pass protecting,” said Goehring.
Like the three seniors who garnered all-state, Trace was first team All-NEC. He has been voted as a captain for next year’s team.
