Schools closed through March 27; plans progress with more changesFree Access

Governor Kristi Noem announced on Tuesday, March 17, that schools across South Dakota will remain closed through Friday, March 27.
Schools will stay closed statewide as a precaution to slow the spread of COVID-19. The governor also said on Tuesday that, so far, South Dakota does not have community spread of the virus.
Mobridge-Pollock School District Superintendent Tim Frederick said on Tuesday, this was not unexpected and the district’s staff is currently working on plans to make changes if the COVID-19 situation expands through the state and the closure dates change.
“This thing just keeps moving” he said. “I really think our people, on the state level, in the governor’s office and national level are doing this the right way, week by week.”
He said that if the virus becomes widespread in the state more changes will be made.
Frederick said he has been in teleconferences and on conference calls throughout the day with the statewide education community. Plans are being discussed to continue education if the closure lasts longer than expected.
He said he will have crucial conversations with the administration and staff about on-line, flex learning education for the district if it becomes a necessity.
“For now, we need people to be cautious,” said Frederick. “The biggest thing is to stay home and be safe.”
He said the district will be offering free sack lunches for pick up through Thursday this week and Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 27 at the high school. The lunches are available for anyone ages 0-18 in the community. The staff asks that people call the school at 845-9200 or 845-9203 to order the lunches.
For now, all school activities are canceled until further notice and all school facilities are closed to anyone except for school employees.
All access cards to the buildings have been deactivated until further notice.
