Seven Tigers place at Webster tourney

The Tigers had a successful day at the Webster Area Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, winning three second-, three third- and one fourth-place finish.
The Tigers placed fourth in team standings.
“We’re improving,” said coach Scott Stone. “We had some tough losses, but we made it a point of letting the boys know that they are wrestling for February.”
Caden Lenz, Isaac Olson and Bray Harrison had second-place finishes. Each wrestler won his first match, but fell in the title tilt.
Lenz took second at 113 pounds. He edged Andrew Volk of Central Cass, N.D., 6-5 in the semis, but lost a narrow 4-3 decision to Jeremy Cook of Tiospa Zina for the championship. Cook is ranked ninth in Class B.
Olson beat Nathan Kaim of Central Cass 9-4 in the semis before getting pinned at 2:57 by fifth-ranked Devon Sievers of Deuel in the title match at 138 pounds.
Harrison took second at 152 pounds by beating Joe Ellison of Central Cass 9-2 before getting pinned at 2:51 by sixth-ranked Zach Rucktaeschel of Webster Area.
Mason Schoenhard, Jaden Madison and Nathan Bauer came in with third-place finishes.
Schoenhard defeated Logan Kennedy of Stanley County 11-3 in the third-place match. He beat Chase Jacobson of Central Cass 12-2 in the first round, but was pinned by Andrew Jahnke of Central Cass in the semifinals. Jahnke is ranked sixth at 138 pounds in North Dakota.
Bauer was pinned by third-ranked Kelby Hawkins of Webster Area in his first match at 160 pounds, but came back to fight off Phillip Gilliland of Sully Buttes 3-1 in the third-place match.
Jason Gerry placed fourth at 170 pounds. He was beaten 5-3 by Austin Wiley of Sully Buttes in his opener, but came back to pin Jayden Face of Stanley County in 39 seconds. He was pinned by Chandler Hersch of Central Cass in the third-place match.
“The success we had was great, but the kids aren’t satisfied,” said Stone. “We want to get keep getting better and peak at the right time.”

Mid Dakota Monster
The Tigers compete in the Mid Dakota Monster in Lyman this weekend.
“This is a big tourney and we’ll see lots of region competition,” said Stone. “I’m happy with our performance so far, but not satisfied. The boys are training even harder. We’re going to keep getting better.”
